I left this comment. I'll be amazed if it's accepted...

And Ann Coulter made how much off of “Godless” not to mention all the other books she wrote? I could compile a pretty long list of millionaires who reject evolution and made lots of money off of their books.
So what?
Talk about a red herring… |

I don't see your reply, and naturally, my reply never made it either.

Bill is just pissed about everyone knowing about billionaire Howard J. Ahmanson's funding of the Discovery Institute (an order of magnitude more than the NCSE's funding), and he's probably annoyed by his own flagging book sales. |

Then there's these replies to Kil:5 Leo Hales 05/06/2008 9:34 pm
Not surprising, really. Religion tends to put restrictions on how much money one makes and how one makes money in the first place. So wealthy people have plenty of motivation to adopt an ideology that undermines religon. | (Utter BS. How about all those super-rich televagelists?)
And: 6 Barb 05/06/2008 10:09 pm
Ann Coulter is a political pundit, not an ID theorist. She writes books, not to support ID, but rather to annoy liberals. I'd be interested to see Kil's list of millionaires. | Start with Ahmanson, I'd say, for however long you're allowed to post.

As well as various televengelists who've criticized evolution. Maybe D. James Kennedy, John Hagee(?), etc. |

Michael Behe has a butt load of money. I can't respond tonight. Too late. If you guys could make suggestions for a pretty long list, I can post faster... |

Didn't Limbaugh have some porcine words on the subject a while back? Or don't motor-mouth junkies count, either?
Well, lessee, there's Bruce Chapman, Phillip Johnson, Jonathon Wells & by extention: Sun Mung Moon, among others. Me, I think I'd play the Wells/Moonie card. That'd probably get you banned in a fraction of a nanosecond. And if not, the resulting comments should be a highly amusing read.

Ok, I done it. Went and registered, and played the Moonie card. We'll see what happens next. <shrug> The whole question of wealth or the lack of it is irrelevant as long as that wealth is legitimately acquired and used above the table.
But I'll play along a little: Sun Mung Moon, sponsor of Dr. Jonathan Wells. He's as rich as Croesus wished he was and supports ID.

Predictably, my brief, and accurate, comment has disappeared into the singularity that exists between 'Uncommon' and 'Descent.' I have another up that I'm sure will suffer the same ignominious fate. Jim Bakker is out of it, Kent Hovind is in the poogie and Falwell is dead, but I'm sure that there are still a lot of televangelists left that are “in it for the money.” Greed is not restricted to any certain segment of society.
But I've never made the charge that DI was only after the cash because I don't think that it is, at least not at the moment. I think that ID is another young movement attempting to build a following, neither more nor less.
As to the examples in the OP, these are people who have worked long in their fields and have acquired considerable talent and expertise, have written books that sold well and are well paid to lecture. Where is the crime in that and what exactly does it all have to do with the Theory of Evolution and/or Intelligent Design?

I attempted this post:
The charge is one of who is doing the funding. So does billionaire Howard J. Ahmanson count? We all know that he has been very generous toward the Discovery Institute. Actually, I don't have a problem with that. He can spend his money as he likes. But he isn't an ID theorist, so does he not count?
The fact that some scientists who wrote popular books that happen to attack ID and support evolution does not equate to funding evolution research. Again, if they made a lot of money off of their books, so what?
The red herring was including those authors. Why even bring them up when talking about funding?
Ann Coulter was waved away as being nothing but a political pundit. So then we can wave away Phillip E. Johnson, a wealthy man, whose books have sold well because he is really a lawyer.
We can wave away any rich people who have supported ID if they are not scientists. I see.
Well, Michael Behe has done all right for himself in the book department. Does he count? He is a scientist, and he is rich off of his book sales.
And again, so what?
I am saying, and I am not missing the point, that bringing up those authors who support evolution are a red herring in any discussion of funding. |
I don't see it as pending though...
Oh man, I wish I had gone over it for grammar...

I just looked for it and it's not yet posted. Could they have shitcanned it so quickly? I'll look again later.
I wonder if they'll actually engage or if the moderation will even allow them to. I don't recall seeing any serious debates there, and certainly none as rancorous as those we're used to, although maybe I've missed them.

Great DaveScot!I'm assuming "for the sake of argument" that Darwin led to Hitler just to make the point that in any case this has nothing at all to do with the science of design detection. You guys just don't get it. I'm beginning to think the chance worshippers were right all along and this IS all about getting a bible on every desktop in every public school in America. How depressing. What Expelled seems to have done more than anything else is to get all the God botherers fired up and out of the closet, dropping any pretense that it was ever about science at all. It is just creationism in a cheap tuxedo. An attempt to establish a theocracy. What a revolting development. Hat tip to AtBC, where at least one person thinks that Dave is trying to get himself fired from UD. |

Nope, didn't see that comin'.
Now that I am an IDer in good standing (I wonder how long that will last), I felt compelled to comment: But at the end of the day, what difference does it make to the Theory of Evolution? It stands on it's merits no matter who is influenced by it nor what acts of saintliness or infamy they might produce.
Having read a good bit of Mien Kamph (couldn't get through the whole thing) I do not think that he was influenced by the ToE much more than knowing about the 'survival of the fittest' part, which speaks of entire species and was poor wording. His greatest influence was a centuries-old, European hatred of Jewry and his own insanity.
An excellent history of Hitler & the Third Reich can be found here:
