I think a possible psychological window into McCain's heart is the notion that his ambitions are driving him to try to out-rank his father and his grandfather, both admirals. In the Navy, McCain was only ever a captain. He'd reached a career dead-end in the Navy, prior to resigning.

Now he'll do anything for his ambition, including sucking up to the worst extreme elements of theocracy. No, his heart's not in the policy positions he holds or discards at will; his heart's in the drive for power, to "show" his Navy ancestors that he's better than they were.
