Um, use VA as your medical coverage?
No, have wanted to back and get disability coverage for a couple things, but it's been 11 years since I got out that I doubt now they'd accept the problems for disability.
Just keep plugging.

I'm not worried about getting health care from the local VA. They're pretty good here. I'm worried about the VA dismissing my claims. These are injuries I got while in military service. Now I'm getting the feeling that the government is saying "so what? live with it". Trish, do you still have all your paperwork? That'll help. I'll get in touch with some people in TREA, maybe they'll have some sugestions. Filthy, where are you!!!!???? You have some experience with this. Help us. Lisa

So have I, Lisa. Recently the VA said that I was 100% covered for my asthma that I got because of the double pneumonia I caught while in the Navy three years back.
Do you have all your medical records from before you were in the service? If you can prove that it's all service related, it might work.
Then again, what do I know?
Good luck, Lisa. *fingers crossed*

Spinal injuries are a bitch to get disability compensation for. I've had 2 fusions, have limited motion, big-time arthritis and bone spurs, and still only get 20% for it. I get a bit more for a couple of other ailments.
I went through the DAV - I'm a life member - and it all went through smoothly.
By all means, challenge it!
wishing luck,

LOL! I, too, thought this was going to be about animals. Since I am dating a vetrinary student, I figured I could relay any questions to her. Instead, y'all are making me worry about my time when the Navy is done with me.

My time in the Navy left me deaf in my right ear and I've been in constant pain, from another wound, for over 30 years now. VA benefits? I've got a box full of medals, does that count? They did send me a letter that because of one project I was involved in there was an increased chance of getting non-Hodchkins lymphoma and they would pay for that. What a comfort in my old age. It was more than a job, it was an adventure...

Good luck Lisa. It took me 2 years to get my 40% and get out,and that was with wounds suffered in Desert Storm! Not to mention the 30% hearing loss in one ear from a Hoffman launcher, but no matter, I have my VA hospital visits to look forward to..yea right...I feel for ya brother, those medals look nice in a display, for all the good they do ya...

Ouch. Myself, I was directly under an AP shell one night that sprayed scrapnel in a circle around me but, luck of the Irish, missed me entirely. Left me deaf and blind for a few days. When the hearing came back in my left ear they stuck a pair of sun glasses on me and sent me back out into "the field." That's something I learned Boron that you should know. The jobs in the Navy that can get you killed never go to the Annapolis grads. Keep your eyes open Ensign.

This is an old topic, but a good one to keep current. I retired on an MEB in March 2002. I nearly crippled myself and spent a couple years in the board process. I got 30% from the Army. 20 for my ankle which has less than 5 degrees movement in three directions, and 10 for my knees. I completely shattered one (they thought I might lose it) and blew the ACL to hell in the other. VA rated me at 80%, fully half of which is for my back. I will always limp. You have to control what the doctors put in your dictation(s). Have him call it in while you are in his office and bring a list of anything you want in there. You have ten days to reply in writing if you want to dispute the MEB findings. You can travel on official orders to address the board in person. This is your RIGHT. However, we sent a guy there in a wheelchair and he left with 20%, so it's your call. If I had squeezed Uncle Sam for 50%, the VA may have given me 100% and I'd not have to work. Keep every appointment slip, prescription receipt, sick call forms, x-rays, consults, etc to the DAV and VA reps! In an hour interview and later a 15 minute exam, I got almost 3 times more retirement than the army offered. And it's tax free. You want everything possible to be "Service Connected". The VA exam is a crock. My doctor hardly broke pace to examine me. Make him slow down and listen to your issues. You're just another GI to him and he's paid piece work. You however, stand to lose money and benefits. DO NOT TAKE THE SEVERANCE FROM THE ARMY (20% or less disability) UNLES VA HAS TOLD YOU THAT YOU SHOULD NOT EXPECT MORE!!! Twofold; 1) The VA almost always raises the Army 10% or so. This can put you into actual retirement (30% or more) where you can receive money for the rest of your life. and 2) The VA must pay back the Army for any severance paid to you FIRST, before it can pay you a monthly disability. This means it could take a couple years to start receiving money from the VA. The Army severance is taxed at 20% federal, then your home state may get a piece. The VA has to pay back the GROSS, however. Money you didn't even receive, before paying you. $20,000 or $30,000 sounds good as a going away present, but it's small potatoes to what you're entitled to if you simply get 30% or more. All the benefits start at 30%. Voc Rehab is golden. It beats the hell out of GI Bill. It's an extra year and it's 100% paid up front, including any lab fees, books, all the stuff GI Bill doesn't. It's in every way superior to the GI Bill. Anyone that has a question about the MEB process, feel free to drop me an email. But remember that the rules change every so often. Especially around fiscal year end. solly88@hotmail.com

Air Farce, Army, Navy, it's all the same for disability and VA paperwork.
