I have many different patients of world wide ethnic types. They vary from Polish, Irish, Cambodian, Pakistani, Chineese, Phillipino, Italian...basically world wide. Each has different reactions to medicine and illness. Orientals tend not to want to know the worst because they then tend to feel they have become a burden to their families. Eastern Europeans down play their illnesses because they just feel it is better to bite the bullett so to speak then to ask for medication. Does anyone here feel they react to illness because of the way their family feels about being sick? If you do How so? I am trying to write a paper on helping other phycisians treat ethnic patients. Things like pain medication because certain groups would just "bite the bullit". I am looking for things their patient might tend to overlook because they see it as a weakness. Anything could be of importance. My Thanks Dr Shari

Doc! I think I could be a wealth of information to you. Well, maybe! I think you nailed it about Eastern Europeans, where my family is from. My father was like that and my mother used to tell me more like yell at me, 'You're JUST like YOUR father'. But I think that was when she was angry at me or him, ha ha. I do see myself acting and having phsycal symptoms much like him. I have an ulcer, like he did and his arthitus too. He passed out once and was bleeding never showed he felt sick or in pain. Never talked much about his feelings or business. When my surgeon did a follow up exam after my gullblader surgery he said he was surprised I wasn't in more pain because the stones were so big. I WAS in pain, I didn't know your are supposed to complain about it that much!!! Speaking of which, perhaps you'd like to continue this in an email. I'm sure others don't want to be bord by someone complaining. Oh, the reason I think I could help you is because my 'room mate' is from Asia, so I could relate his stories too.
