Agreed.
If America's so great, why the north european countries are so much better off? Heck, I'd pick Canada or Sweden (or even UK, I love England) over US anytime.
In in my humble third-worlder opinion, US just needs to grow some balls and get over Cuba. It won't bow down for as long as Castro and his supporters are alive.
I wonder if Cuba's socialism would be better off if there wasn't a power like US choking it. |

Just as our government is hypocritical about sanctions against China, the world will not sanction the US because it's all about trade, money, corporate interests, and so on. It never really is about ethics or the 'right thing'. We can sanction Cuba because they are insignificant as a trading partner. In fact, I'm not sure but maybe competition in the sugar market is unwanted.
But while I'm berating my own government, don't lump 'we Americans' all in one pot, thank you. 49% of us do not like our current government's decisions. Your governments (as in all governments) have not always acted in the world's best interests either. |

Oh so true. If there ever vill be some form of sanction against the US there will probably be on trade, which will cause a trade war. Ethics will never make this affordable.quote: But while I'm berating my own government, don't lump 'we Americans' all in one pot, thank you. 49% of us do not like our current government's decisions.
49% of the people who was eligible and could be bothered to vote, that is. Unfortunately a big difference. 57 million voted against Bush, about 150 million eligible voters did not. Kudos to the 57 million.quote: Your governments (as in all governments) have not always acted in the world's best interests either.
Hypocrisy is our main national resource.

Yes, it's overdue. Sanctions only work when other nations bring the same sanctions. It's not fear of another economic policy that has kept US sanctions in place.
This is a spat over land and a bruised ego from a double cross that is over 40 years old.
Under the Baptista rule, US companies had significant land holdings and businesses in Cuba. Castro was talking about freeing the people and the US decided to back him as he promised to not be a Communist. When Castro won a hard fought revolt with US backing, Castro took off the hat he was given by the US and put on the Soviet star. He then siezed all lands including US holdings without compensation to the companies.
It was these events which were the basis of the sanctions. The US companies have a long memmory and have been pressing the government to continue sanctions. The rest of the world did not have significant holdings in Cuba and have long since dropped sanctions.
Castro will be dead soon (from old age, I suspect) and it's time to open up new markets. Castro's human rights violations pale in comparison to China. |
