From today's Washington Post.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1822-2002May23.html
How ironic that the senior military brass, of all people, is not gung-ho about rushing into Iraq. Could it be that they don't see any value in a military solution for Saddam?
I'm glad SOMEBODY has their head screwed on. Now if they can just convince the Reichfuhrer in the White House.

Is it just me, or is this whole discussion a bad idea? I mean Saddam can hear it, too, when Bush annonces openly for the whole word to hear, that he is planning to kill him as soon as he gets his shit together. If I were Saddam, I would probably not wait until my enemy is ready to attack me.
What do I haer? That is irrelevant because Saddam does not have the power to attack the US in any way? So why would they want to go after him at all?
If they really think that Saddam had all kinds of weapons of massdestruction and close ties to terrorists, they should not aggreviate him this much.

Or these are fake leaks, and we're about to attack.

After re-reading the article, I realized that there really isn't anything new that hasn't been laid out on the table before. However, it is a good summary of the current situation.
Saddam knows that Bush's European backing is wobbly. He also knows what an earful Powell Cheney got from Arab leaders about their support for a military strike against Iraq. Add to that the humnaitarian rules changes for the UN embargo and you've got a recipe for Bush to give himself a politically fatal self-inflicted wound.
Saddam's best gambit is to smile, curse the U.S., wave his assault rifle and do nothing. If Bush then decides to attack, the rest of the world will ask "What the Hell for?" |

Don't think so, TD. Someone with more current military experience can correct me, but I believe the rule of thumb is about 25 support personnel for every grunt on the firing line. In other words, you have to move a helluva lota people and material around to strike into Iraq. This isn't a weekend fling to Panama or Grenada.

Mespo, I see it pretty much the same as you. I think attacking Iraq without provaction would be a stupid move. Saddam is a foul fellow, for sure, but Bush the Elder missed his chance and there is no legitiment reason that I have seen, thus far, for Bush the Lesser to try and clean up after his father. I think that the international repercussions would not be in our favor.

I don't think they have said that a military solution is not a good one. I think they've said that they're not prepared right now for that.
