Here's an English translation of an article in the German magazine Der Spiegel:
It is said, that, before September 11, George W. Bush thought the Taliban were a Bavarian brass band. Now, thanks to his comprehensive knowledge, the most powerful man in the world has got into hot water again.
Washington - It was Condoleezza Rice, national security advisor, who helped her boss out of the embarassing situation. During a conversation between the two presidents, George W. Bush, 55, (USA) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, 71, (Brazil), Bush bewildered his colleague with the question "Do you have blacks, too?"
Rice, 47, noicing how astonished the Brazilian was, saved the day by telling Bush "Mr. President, Brazil probably has more blacks than the USA. Some say it's the Country with the most blacks outside Africa." Later, the Brazilian president Cardoso said: regarding Latin America, Bush was still in his "learning phase".
Just don't give the man any nuclear weapons. Oh damn, too late!

Hmmm, could you provided a link for that? Sounds like an urban legend in the making. Personally, I think the man is a whack, but I have some doubts about this one. Lisa

The Spiegel article does exist. And has accurately translated.
The URL for it is: http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,196865,00.html
http://216.239.35.120/translate_c?hl=en&langpair=de%7Cen&u=http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,196865,00.html&prev=/language_tools Google Translation
I was unable to find any sort of independent confirmation that the Spiegel story is in fact true.
While I can accept that Mr. Bush was unaware of the ethnic makeup of the Brazillian poupulation I somehow can't see that even he would be dumb enough to ask such a stupid question.
Providing a direct link to the Google translation does not seem to work. So you will either have to just believe that the above translation is correct or enter the URL youself at http://www.google.com/language_tools

This quote made today's (5/31) Doonesbury's "Say what?"

Admittedly, this isn't true verfication but does provide a second (usually reliable) source.

I think that I caught this one on either Buzzflash of Democratic Underground. It might even have been on Drudge.
It is a sad commentary on our current administration that it even MIGHT be true.

The speed at which false information is spread via the web and the places it has been repeated in these examples makes me question the authenticity. I wouldn't mind seeing a clip on ABC news if it is true.

Der Spiegel is a pretty good magazine. It might have been them that published the Hitler diaries, so that was not so clever. It is like Time, but more indepth.
George W. imagine outside the U.S. is real bad, so it would be wise to cautious about what is written. But it is a good one so I am going to believe it

The Hitler Diaries were 'discovered' by the Stern not the Spiegel. Small differrence.

The story is up onSnopes now.
The Urban Legends reference page list it as still undetermined but give some good reasons why it probably is not true. They have also found the earliest pre-Spiegel incarnation of the story in the Brazillian news.
They will probably have more in a few days.

I remember reading a commentary by Molly Ivins, I believe, where she recounts G.W.'s denounciation of Castro, during the Carter trip. G.W. complained of castro's human rights abuses, and made a call for free elections in cuba. All this time, he was standing shoulder to shoulder with Mahathir bin Mohamad of Malaysia. I thought that this spoke volumes for his attempts at some type of coherent foriegn policy.
One of our native sons, (though, not exactly a favorite son), James Carville put it very well when he said, "In the Clinton administration we worried the president would open his zipper. In the Bush administration, they worry the president will open his mouth."
Anyways, you've got to admire a man that advertises his ignorance everytime he tries to have an original thought, and keeps coming back for more. Maybe, it's his trust in Jesus that keeps him going, and completely unaware of his consistant faux pas'.
"The Constitution ..., is a marvelous document for self-government by Christian people. But the minute you turn the document into the hands of non-Christian and atheistic people they can use it to destroy the very foundation of our society." P. Robertson |
