Good news from the Marines, having had the opportunity to talk with a fellow Marine that separated in the last year, the only difference between the men's and women's PFTs are pull-ups for the men and flexed arm hang for women. Women are now required to make the 3 mile run v. 1 1/2 mile run and 80 sit-ups in 2 minutes v. 50 sit-ups in 1 minute. WMs are also required to go through what used to be Infantry Training Regiment after bootcamp it's now called MTC - I'm not sure what the acronym stands for though - Military Training Command would be a guess. But apparently, nothing has changed as far as requirements with the change in name. This is the way it should be.

Sounds good. But that still only accounts for the PT test. This thread has shown that there are far many more issues than just that one. Maybe it's a first step, though.......

No, it also accounts for much of the training that is done by the Marines, post bootcamp.
I know that washing the hair under a water buffalo is a reality in the Marines, even for the women. So is sleeping in a tent that the women even put up.
You seem to have ignored the point about MTC. That used to be ITR (Infantry Training Regiment). All men and women in the Marines go through this training regiment and all must meet all requirements.
There never was an issue in the Marines about field duties. At least, not that I was aware of.

Sounds like a great policy. I have to admit I'm not as familiar with the Marines. They have no Special Operations and so I rarely ever worked with them. The ones I did know were in all male units (at the time at least) like EOD. The policy sounds like someone is thinking in the right direction. But it's still a far cry from anything even remotely resembling total equality. I've slept in tents (large ones, I've never seen a male and female share a shelter half alone) with females in the field. Sure it happens. But when it comes time (if you are so lucky) for a shower, or even a rain storm, there will be problems. We lose our equal-ness when we're butt naked. When you leave the field, there is still seperate quarters and latrines. Which is a pain in a 1sg's ass, who really has better things to do. A commander still must consider gender issues with every decision. Which does not equal equality. Yet. It may change for the better. But I question 'identical' standards for things like PT. Usually this just means lowering the standard to get bodies thru, instead of making everyone meet a higher standard. Then you only have a force of fat-asses. The closest I've seen to real equality in the military was in Starship Troopers (yeah, I was the other guy who bothered to see it) where EVERYTHING is co-ed and there is only one standard. Failure means expulsion- not special ability groups and 'fat-boy' programs (women get stuck in these all the time too, but because of the stupid standards for it, not really their weight) and that crap. Right now, it's really hard to toss a shit-bag out of the service, male or female. So don't forget to change that policy too. A standard is only a standard if it's enforced, that goes for any soldier.

Since my military service was 1)During the Korean War; and, 2)In a still not integrated service (submarines), reading through this thread brings to mind a question: Considering the pregnancy/period aspect of females in the service, why aren't they required, while on active duty, to use some form of birthcontrol (the pill, or better yet, Norplant)?
Curious.
