I can't say I was overly surprised. Last night I went to my first PTO meeting at my son's school; he's in kindergarten. The meeting, held in the school gym, featured the kindergarten class singing patriotic songs in memorial of the terrorist attacks.

Fine, no problem.

One of the 3 songs was "God Bless America" Problem, but not worth making a fuss over.

Then, to my amazment, they bring in a local rev. to lead the assembly in prayer.

Big fucking problem. I'd like to challenge this, but my son has had a dificcult 2 years and is still having trouble adjusting to the new state and to school. There's no way I can take any action without the backlash hurting him, not to mention giving my ex ammunition to take to court if she tried to get custody.

I'm just venting, but this sucks.

I have to agree with you. It does suck.
Here in Saskatchewan, there was a controversy in one of the larger cities a few years ago, when teachers in a public schools were making their students recite the lords prayer. A father of a Muslim student rightfully complained, and it took nearly a year for the legislation to come through making the teachers stop.
Meanwhile, the teachers made the students who refused to recite sit out in the hall for the duration, as if they had done something wrong.
What is it with Christians and forcing their beliefs on everyone in shouting distance?

Uh oh, I'm ranting again...

Thanks for venting but I think if we don't stop it now or at least let 'them' know that not everyone feels that way, it will overtake us and we'll be like the middle East with no freedom. Everyone will look and act the same and be afraid to speak up.
Here's what I did, although it wasn't quite the same situation and it was high school and there are over 1,000 students in the school, (if all that makes a difference):
My sons English teacher had mentioned god one too many times in the classroom and not in any context of education, I wrote a note to the principal saying I didn't wish to get anyone in trouble or make a big problem at this time but could he please speak to the teacher about the separation of church and state.

So I would suggest that you go to the next highest up person in the system, be polite but factual and see what they say. Maybe you could do it in a general, say you are concerned that not everyone believes in the same religion, way without involving your child.

Sounds like a pridicament. Anyway you would know of any other parents willing to threaten legal action, or seek advice from groups like the ACLU?

Man, it's war. They need to get to the youth early, before they get brainwashed by that evil science. If they can't indoctrinate the children, they can't rule the planet.

When I was in grade 9 english a few years back, we did a small portion about mythological history, including Christian "Myths". The teacher spent nearly an hour saying that he would call parts of the bible myths, but he didn't want to offend anyone. Now, there are is the odd practicing Christian in the school, but there are nearly as many practicing Muslims, and a few less jews. Not one mention of apology to them that he would be calling their histories myths. I guess even in a public school system, not all religions and beliefs are equal.

christmas time in elementry school, where at an impressionable stage we had to learn the story of Jesus every year, and up until my last years in school that we were forbidden to mention the name God in our plays. This isn't because some athiest parents rejected it, but our school had six Jehova's Witnesses in the population.

In grade 2 or 3 I got sick of the religion thing and refused to write a book on the story of the first christmas. the first and only time I got detention.
