http://www.randi.org Scroll down the the part about the conference. You can make all your reservations on-line. There's going to be some cool guest speakers, including The Bad Astronomer and Michael Shermer. For anyone arriving early, we're planning a trip to the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday. We'll be back in time for another skepchick and I to raid Randi's radio show Thursday night. We feel that more skeptical female voices need to be heard. Speaking of skepchicks, the first annual skepchick pubcrawl is Saturday at 2200. Guys, find something else to do. Except for Phil, we're kidnapping him and dragging him along. Make sure the hotel knows you're going to be there for the Amazing meeting, you'll get the discount. I talked to someone who used to live in the area, and he said rooms at this hotel usually go for about $185/night. We're getting our rooms for $109. If anyone needs some help with the registration, or has any questions, please feel free to wing me a PM or an email. Lisa

C'mon, they just want you for your money, Phil. Who do you think will end up buying that night?

Phil, I thought you were going to put something on your site about the conference. It would be fun if a bunch of BAer's showed up too. (But they can organise their own pubcrawl) |

OK. I wish I could go to this too. And, I am a big fan of James Randi, as every skeptic should be. But I have a complaint. At least a couple of the speakers attending the conference are well aquatinted with our site. Bob Carroll has even included one of my essays at the Skeptic Refuge part of his Skeptic Dictionary site. (I'm sandwiched in between Randi and Shermer.) We link to his site and some of his regulars are regular here too. So why is it that he doesn't link to us? |

Well, yes. Thanks!
Really, I'm baffled... His is probab;y the only major skeptic site that doesn't link to us.
I don't know what the criteria is. I know Randi is rather generous with his time. A few years ago I wrote to him about including one of his rants on our site. (Our old "Truth and Other Lies" site that gave birth to SFN.) He answered personally. I really appreciated that.
Also, when they were setting up their forum, someone at his site suggested they look at the SFN forum for ideas. So, go figure?
Anyhow, this is only a tiny kfetch of mine. If nothing comes of it, that's ok....

FYI - Here is a small update concerning the JREF's "Amazing Meeting" from the randi.org website:
quote:
One — only one — of the special people appearing at The Amazing Meeting will be Marvin Minsky! He just called and announced his intention. Marvin has made many contributions to AI [Artificial Intelligence], cognitive psychology, mathematics, computational linguistics, robotics, and optics. His conception of human intellectual structure and function is presented in The Society of Mind (CDROM), a book which is also the title of the course he teaches at MIT.
Marvin received his BA and PhD in mathematics at Harvard and Princeton. His inventions include the SNARC (the first neural network simulator), mechanical hands and other robotic devices, the confocal scanning microscope, the "Muse" synthesizer for musical variations (with E. Fredkin), and the first LOGO "turtle" (with S. Papert). A member of the NAS, NAE and Argentine NAS, he has received the ACM Turing Award, the MIT Killian Award, the Japan Prize, the IJCAI Research Excellence Award, the Rank Prize, the Robert Wood Prize for Optoelectronics, and the Benjamin Franklin Medal.
And, ready for this? I just received the registration of Fred Durant III, astrophysicist, former Assistant Director of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and president of the International Astronomical Federation. Haven't seen this illustrious gentleman for years. When Horkheimer, Plait, and Durant get together.....!
We also have an offer from Susan Barnett, director of the beautiful Buehler Planetarium near here, to host a visit during the Meeting. They have a 16" telescope (telescopes are measured by diameter of the main optic, not length!) and Orion will be overhead....! We can only accommodate 30 persons on such a visit, so get your reservation in early.
