(No I'm not planning one)

What is the policy on someone posting flamebait, spamming, cross-posting or just generally being an asshole?

Are there any restrictions on swearing/off-color jokes?

I'm not a troll, I would simply like to know where the boundaries are so I don't go near them. I'm not a "push the envelope" guy.

Hi Titanpoint and welcome.

Good question. We've had some pretty rough scraps in here, but none have gone to the point of death threats. And, I, for one, love troll-bashing as well as the next, vicious, old psychopath.

As for language, jokes, etc., well, all of us are not adults and there are many lurkers. I'd just say, "Show some class."

Again, welcome!

The moderators have a degree of flexibility with regard to warnings and post editing. As far as I know, there are no hard-and-fast rules about posting behavior beyond the standard 'be excellent to each other.' That said, speaking strictly for myself, I don't necessarily mind invective as long as it is in context with something substantive, and it doesn't cross my admittedly subjective line. "Can't you read you fucking idiot?" would be over the line, for example, even if followed by 3000 words of eloquent rebuttal. Overt racism, sexism, etc. are usually right out. I always try to give ample warning before becoming editorially involved. I tend to go easy on profanity as it's common enough to everyday speech to lack the impact it once did. Honestly, we usually don't see outright flaming here much and even the occasional over-the-top remark is rare. This is a skeptics' board, after all. I suppose we tend to have a large capacity for tolerance.

Crossposting is not allowed...period. If I find crosspostings I will lock all but one. I will also move posts posted to the wrong forum. This needs to be done to cut down on confusion. Spam is simply deleted as it has no place here. We have only had 2 occassions where I went so far as deleting posts but these were very offensive personal attacks that benefitted no one. While I hate deleting any posts there are times when you just have to but a couple deletions in 3 years is not too bad considering the subject matter which is discussed here.

I assume you are the same titanpoint that posts at JREF? If that is the case, you'll probably find that things are a little more restrained here than there. But the moderators here are still pretty liberal: I've never seen anyone censored without very good cause. Arguements are quite welcome - just be prepared to back them up.

And Welcome.

Heh, we would never censor anyone with an argument even if we disagreed 100%. The only thing we can't have is people that come here to make trouble and that's the only reason the come here. I am talking specifically about Casey types for those of you that remember that particular troll. Apart from hat incident we have had virtually no other reason to delete a post except for the occassional spam. We have been very, very lucky.

Why? I happen to be a racist. Perhaps having grown up in a 'free' country I believe one should be able to say most anything even if it's not popular and censorship is something from a country where people are brainwashed or threatened into not saying what they think.
So I say let people say what they want, can't a skeptic argue a point without shutting someone out?
As for trolls, I also am one. Just tonight Skylar wanted to walk out the door and I stood in the way and told him I'm a troll and he'd have to answer a question in order to pass by. So, what's wrong with little people with pointed ears who live under bridges? You have a problem with that too?

Snake,

I didn't make it clear that I was referring to sexist/racist remarks directed at an individual poster. Statements like, "All Asians are X" while generally reprehensible, are not usually worthy of censorship, IMHO. Better to debate and educate in that case.

Thank you for clearing that up. So it's ok for me to continue to say that Asians and Chinese in particular are the smartest people in the world and whites are dumbasses(comparied to them)? Great!

Sure you can say that but it would be much more effective if you provided some sort of data or evidence to back it up.

There's very little moderation on this board because we really haven't needed it. The last real incident we had was when some flamebait fundy troll blew in here. Opened the forum one morning and there were numerous threads in quite a few folders that all basically said "I hate atheists and you're all going to hell, hahaha". Okay guy, whatever, have a nut.
This board is pretty laid back, and we'll put up with a lot. Remember the flea market dude who thought the CIA was following him? I kinda miss that guy.

Since it was an opinion I don't need to supply data. And just as most of what people argue about is only opinion. As in another folder here they are talking about the difference between atheists and agnostics. Someone can give the definitions from the dictionary but others will still say what it means to them. Also like the US Constitution the courts are always trying to say what they think was meant. Opinion.
In the end, do facts really mean anything when someone (some government) has the power to do what they want regardless of evidence?

But Blue Monk, surely you've heard of George, W. Bush?

There's a living example of Snake's claim, whether she was serious or not.

(hehehe)

Edited to add nasty chuckle.

Thank you Filthy. But P. Bush is so far down on the brain scale, behind EVERYONE, do you think it's fair to count him?
BTW, I do realize that we all generalize much but I really think Asians are smarter....if not through brain cells alone then the way their culture works in that they prize education, which does make them more intelligent just for doing that.

Not really. I just wondered what would happen if Franko or JK wandered in here?
