Thought I'd share a story here. If it is allowed!
There is a coworker of mine who is totally convinced that chiropracty is for him. I asked him why he went to a chiropractor and he conveyed to me that he went to a chiropractor to prevent future problems.
So begins my tale told second hand of course.
He went to the C (yes, I'm gonna abbreviate, deal with it) to stop future back problems. What impressed him most is that before he could see the C he had to watch a video of all the "extensive" education the C had taken. He had never been to a regular doctor that had shown him a video tape of his education so he was mightily impressed.
Then the C went on to tell him that he had treated a former president ( he was not naming names) and so my friend was impressed by the fact that a President of the United States had intrusted said C (who has an office in Anoka MN - small look it up) with his spinal structure.
Then my friend, went to the C for months to fix a problem in the curvature of his spine. Of course, this was shown to him by the C with an x ray but there was no second opinion. He "treated" him for many months until the curvature was gone. I asked how he knew it was gone. You guessed it, because the C said so. I asked if he had taken an x ray at this point of recovery. The answer was no. Somehow I wonder that if x rays are so important in diagnosis, why are they not important in claiming cure.
Anyhow, the story goes on...
There was another person in the building. A "Chinese Doctor" who diagnosed his wife as having a serious heart murmur. Yep, he did an EKG right in the chiropractor's office and diagnosed a heart condition. My friend was amazed that none of her "regular" doctors had ever found a problem.
I asked if he had her evaluated by a heart specialist - he said no, not yet, but he was going to. I asked if the doctor had sent the EKG out to be read by a specialist - he said "Why would they do that?"
Of course, asking the question of how the C knew he was cured without an x ray was laughed off, as well as, asking how a medical doctor did not find a murmur was also laughed off. And I was attacked verbally by another friend by being a cynic. I'm not a cynic, because I can laugh at the whole thing! Hee Hee Hee, ok it's not funny.

The hard part is to know what to do about it when your friends and family get involved in such things. |

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't get him to put the coffee on."
At the risk of being snarled at by those who believe in Chiropractors, I will state that your friend(s) could have gotten the same or better results from a good massuse. And would not have had to pay for a bunch of meaningless X-rays -- incidently, to someone who is not familiar with the human spine, an X-ray of even a normal one is a strange sight from any angle. I suspect that these quacks use that to their advantage.
I read an article in, I think, The Anomolist, that said there were now so many Chiropractors graduating from 'schools all across the nation, that competition was beginning to get fierce in places.
Hoping that your friends soon lose their 'woos'.

The one that bothers me is the heart condition story. Denise, we've known each other for a while, right? You know I have a heart condition. I'm on meds, and everything is cool when I remember to take them. So people want touchy feely care? Hug your dog. I'll still settle for competent care. When I was wheeled into the emergency room, the doc said the tests indicated a heart condition. He also stated that he wasn't a heart specialist, and would feel better if I was seen by an expert. The next day I was downtown in a heart specialist office. The guy was a total asshole, with the bedside manner of potting soil. But he confirmed the first doc's diagnosis. If I want someone to hold my hand, I'll visit the little old lady down the street who keeps trying to dump potloads of tea into me. If I need medical care, I'll see a qualified doctor. [/rant] |
