[I would like to be the first to note my ignorance to mainstream astronomy. I just wanted a little clarification and possibly a second opinion.]
The link at the bottom of my thread was posted a couple of hours ago in reference to new discoveries of water on Mars.
If I remember correctly, wasn't water already found? Water with some form of micro-organism frozen in it? Then the part about the micro-organism turned out to be a mistake. (I apologize, I have no link to this. It's purely what I remember hearing awhile back.)
The link to the news bit is here: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_724413.html

You're thinking of the Alan Hills 84001 meteorite from Mars that was found in Antartica a couple of years ago. Microscopic structures in it were thought to be fossilised remains of Martian micro-organisms, but now scientists aren't so sure. |

Ur right--the water-finding on Mars is old, old stuff.
My guess is that ur article had it's source with this story at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/releases/2002/release_2002_221.cfm posted at the jpl.nasa.gov HomePage on the 7th of December (--which was, hmmmmmmm, the date that PearlHarbor was bombed in 1941--) this year. Uhhh. That's 2 days ago.
Here's another story ( http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/28may_marsice.htm ) on the NASA site from back in August of this year talking about Martian ice being found in vast quantities.

This has not much to do with your question but since there seems to be many on here who like astronomy I wanted to post this and didn't know where else to do it. Guess where I was on Saturday?
San Jose, California.
Guess what I saw there? (it was awesome)
One of the telescopes at the Lick Observatory!!! All I can say is WOW!. Too awesome. The floor moves up and down too.
Did you know that James Lick is buried under the telescope? He, in his life time, never went up to the top of the mountain that he was building as a monument for himself, so after he died they took him up there and put him under it. Cool! |
