Everyone hates me when I say this one, but it truly was one of my favorite sci-fi books, Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard.

It was nothing like the movie and there is no Dianetics in it. Hubbard wrote it long before his Scientology religious movement.

Yes, that was a good one. I've a tattered, paperback copy around here somewhere, a holdover from my Sci Fi days (which haven't really ended altogether).

The Mote in God's Eye is also good -- Larry Niven.

And Footfall -- same author.

I'm glad to have a good review on it... I've been tempted to rent that one for quite awhile. So I think it just might be the next one.

I'm overdosing on Heinlein now, but I've downloaded a fair quantity of Larry Niven e-books (including Inferno and Mote on God's Eye).

Welcome to the Skeptic Friends Network, Ruby.

We just featured that book in Skeptic Summary #24.

And I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to trim your first two posts here.

Anything by Iain M banks. not Iain Banks, same author but with the M its sci fi.

Sci Fi with a difference though, well written and fascinating,, any of the culture books are worth checking out. Specifically

Consider Phlebas
Player of Games
Excession

Consider phlebas is the best to introduce you to the world of the Culture. Definitely worht reading even if you aren't a fan of sci fi. A good look at one possible future of the human species.

Genome, by Matt Ridley A very compelling read that looks at the human genome and some of the implications of our exploration of it. Written in language that most can easily understand and not be bored by. He presents each chapter in two parts; a story about the chromosome and specific gene he's talking about from that chromosome, and some specific science (presented in laymans terms) about the gene.

Red Queen, also by Matt Ridley, is also excellent.

Cheers

Yes to all Douglas Adams

Yes to all PK Dick

Yes to "The Foundation trilogy"

.....however, it is no surprise that no-one here has recommended Robert Anton Wilson (particularly "The cosmic trigger" trilogy) seein' as how he rips into your heros James Randi and Carl Sagan.

If you indeed have an open mind take him on and feel yourself boil.

Can science and God be reconciled in any way?

An excellent book that explores this very question is "God and the new physics" by Paul Davies (an Aussie, btw).
