Yeah, that's a doozy, alright.
It makes one wonder about the competence of the school's staff. Wouldn't it have been easier to take the 'knife' away and give the kid a mild scolding about it?

Quite a snappy comeback from the kid's parents/attorney; if the school pursues upholding his suspension for having a "weapon", they'll seek criminal charges against the school for "supplying weapons to children".
Two thumbs up on that one. |

Good grief.
About 15 years ago, a friend of mine had a block of cheese and a cheese knife in a paper bag on the passenger seat of his car when he got pulled over for speeding. He wound up doing 10 days in jail for having a concealed weapon. Of course, he probably pissed the cop off in some way to get that trumped-up charge, but still, it would seem that the kid's hassles aren't without some precedent.

Let's compare that story to a personal one...
About 15 years ago, a large boy used to take my daughter's lunch money away at the school bus stop at a military base I was stationed at. After 3 days of this, my son (only 7 at the time) decided to stop the boy - of course, he didn't bother to talk to me about it LOL. I was called by the school at 8 to come get my son.
It seems he helped himself to a butcher knife from the kitchen and took it to the bus stop. When the boy came to steal her money, my son pulled out the butcher knife and told him never to touch his sister again.
The bus driver (for some reason) took exception and the knife.
The next day, I accompanied my daughter to the bus stop. She pointed out the boy and I "escorted" him home. After a short conversation with his parents, they decided to move off base to other housing.
My son had 1 day off from school - he was forced to stay home and watch cartoons - and when I got home, he wasn't punished. He agreed to advise me of problems in the future and enjoyed his favorite dessert for dinner for protecting his sister.
My children were left alone at the bus stop subsequently. |
