The government monitors the internet? Well, duh! What did you think, that it was private?
You do know that cell phones aren't private either don't you?

Reading my email because I criticized the President would be an invasion of my privacy. It's not like presidents haven't done that sort of thing before. It's one thing to read up on what people are saying and it's quite another to monitor private communication. It's still another to use public funds to track political foes. This has nothing to do with national security in many cases. Think back to the Nixon days...

Then it's best that you keep in mind that anything that you put on the net, send in an E-mail, or say on a cell phone or any cordless phone is not considered to be a private message by the courts.

Well, Filthy, if they come for you, I'll be right behind you. Will you hold my hand as they lead us away?
We won't go quietly. Right?

You & me, babe. We'll go down swingin'. It's the swingin' way to go.

I fear that Slater is stone right. The happy, old days of private communications are coming to an end.

You missed my point completely. If the feds are monitoring anyone for anything it had better be clearly a matter of national security. This was something abused by Nixon when he used the CIA and FBI to monitor his political enemies for political purposes. It doesn't matter how private it is or not. It's a misuse of public resources pure and simple.

@tomic my friend, this administration cares no more about the Constitution than a dog with mange cares about fleas. Forget about having private communications except face to face. All other will soon be history, if these sorry bastards are allowed to continue in office.

So, am I a conspiricy theorist? Perhaps. Let's wait and see.

I'm just wondering if this actually surprises anyone. As Slater inferred, they're already doing it. Why not make it more efficient, and reduce the chances of being censured by a judge?

Plus, now's the time to do it. 'God' only knows how many evil terrorists are lurking at the Adult Chat Network using coded messages about phallic buildings they intend to blow..er, I mean blow up.

Seriously, this I expected. This legislation can also be overturnrd in the future. My main worry is still the judges that GW is trying to appoint. These guys are in for life.

Don't get me started on those evil things.
Of course they are not private. Those stupid women walk around with them in the supper market and you can hear every word of their loud conversations.
I stand next to them and peer so I don't miss a word.

Point taken. The unfortunate thing is that you're giving the impression of trying to justify the monitoring of Web sites by the Secret Political Police to look for people who might be thinking Unapproved Thoughts- or to give the impression that they're doing so in order to frighten people away from saying anything that the S.P.P. might not like.

I could, of course, be mistaken about your intent. Your rather brusque posting style can be hard to interpret.

Let's be clear here: a society in which people are afraid to express political opinions in public cannot be called "free".

With an Ashcroftian Justice Deparment writing draft legislation which would explicitly legitimize secret arrests and the deprivation of citizenship at the behest of the Attorney General, and explicitly deny all judicial review, I'd say there's plenty of evidence to support characterizing the Bush regime's attitude towards basic American constitutional freedoms as somewhere between banana-republic authoritarianism and fascism.

If destroying the rule of law under an independent judiciarly and handing us all over to rule by administrative fiat doesn't qualify as either Fascism or Stalinism, I don't know what does.

I'm with Filthy. This lot are unfit to fill the office of Chief Dogcatcher.

There's a war on and they are busy looking for the enemy. Do not waste their time by making yourself look like one.

In other words, don't dare to criticize the regime? Don't take freedom of speech seriously? Just shut up lest some police bureaucrat get peeved at you?

Shall we just wait in the hope that once the PNAC endless war is over, our benevolent leaders will once again confer on us the rights we once defined as self-evident? That's placing an awful lot of faith in the conscience of a fundie authoritarian.

Well, thank you, Comrade Gletkin.

In the light of your selfless service to the Party, you probably won't mind at all if your sentence is pronounced administratively.

Unbelievable slater. By not addressing my concerns you imply that you are OK with the secret police aiding specific political parties.

And I think they will try to introduce that second bill " the enhancement" to Patriot Act right when noone is looking. We got lucky the last time and that was because of a press leak.
