I had a patient come to me in tears a few weeks ago because she had fosaken her Methodist roots to become a Mormon and now was being shunned and threatened by church members because she had decided to return to the Methodist Church. Fundamantalists seem weird to us, Seven Day Adventists are willing to send anyone to hell who doesn't remember that Saturday and not Sunday is the Sabbath but a true Mormon or Church of the Latter Day Saints has even the Realiens beat in my book. This site would take too long for me to begin to expalin the oddities of this "religion" to those who do not live within the sphere of their influence or has no knowledge of the doctrine of this church but dyied in the wool fundamentalist anything has nothing on these wackos. Take some time looking up their web sites and see for your self what it is they want you to belive. Of course they are as secretive as Scientologists and will not give up the truth easily to anyone they haven't felt has been converted but if you are a man who would like to be given his own world to be populated by your many wives then jump right in and believe their teachings. Only aliens could have thought of a stranger religion.

IMO, any one of those religions, starting with the Grand Daddy of them all the Jews, are all nuts. People seeing Jesus in tacos, Mary in the bark of a tree or shadow of a window, or little children 'speaking to' the Virgin Mary..... how is that any less wierd? Just 'cause Joe saw a vision only proves once again they are all mental defectives. Moses and Joan all had the same motives, if not mental disease then polititcal and controling of the masses.

Wow. First of all calm down. Breathe.
Okay, so your patient is getting a little flak for leaving the church of the Latter Day Saints?
I don't have the sites bookmarked, but there are support groups. People who are probably going through the same crap.
If you can't google this stuff easily, let me know. I saw the links on another forum I'm on, but it's been a while. But if you need me to do the search, please let me know.

Umm. Latterday Saints.

I read somewhere -- sorry, no reference -- that the Mormons are the fastest-growing cult, religion, sect organized bunch of believers in the world.

I'm reminded that Elizabeth Smart and that dingbat, whassisface, Emmanule are Morman. It's my understanding that Manny was booted out of the church for being all together too weird, even for them.

I've heard the same statistic quoted for Islam, Neo-paganism, and Mormons. I believe that Islam is growing the fastest by sheer numbers, Neo-paganism is fastest by percentage increase, and Mormonism is fastest percentage growth by a Christian sect.

Mormonism does use a form of shunning for people who convert from Mormonism. There are support groups online for them. I also have a real problem with the Mormons penchant for post-mortem conversions and collection of geneological records for this purpose.

Hey Snake, I wonder who was the most mentally defective, the guy who claimed to have had a vision, or the ones who believed him?

OK. Just wondering...
When was the last time you heard of a Jew seeing Jesus in a taco?

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Right. Since there are various forms and degrees of illness, that's a good point.
However, the brainwashed ones might not have been followers if the one with schizophrenia hadn't started it in the 1st place. Just a thought.

Ahem... Neo-Paganism organized?
Right.
And all the cats in the world are collaborating to enslave the human species and form a worldspanning government...

Have you ever spoken with 10 different Neo-pagans about what their faith entails? You'll end up with at least 11 different answers. And if you then goes back to them they'll all concede that any and all of the answers you present to them is: "Correct. At least as correct as anything else I've heard." or something along those lines.

Phoenix, I am a Neo-pagan. The national organization is Covenant of the Goddess. Neo-paganism is divided into several denominations which differ on style of worship and fringe issues. There are a core set of beliefs which is consistent.

Hmm, neopaganism? The movement that Isaac Bonewits helped found? It happens to be one of those few movements that has earned my respect. Why? Because they respect and treat other beliefs in dignity.

It is true Valiant Dancer that (at least most of us, not sure about all) Neo-Pagans share a common core set of beliefs. To those who are not familiar with neopaganism however can easily to get stuck on the differences.
While there may well be a national organization in the USA, none is found here in Sweden, and there's no one who claims to be the "world head of the Neo-Pagan movement", like the papacy is the head of all christianity.

And Yay! There's a fellow neopagan, and a fellow Equites Ivbalis here! BB, and PIQE to you two!

Hi PhoenixPaw! Welcome to SFN!

Me, I think I'll just remain an atheist. It's easier.

COG is a collection of groups within the US which have decided to pool resources to get clergy recognition and aid neo-pagans in defense of their religious freedoms. (The fundies here do try to make us illegal at times.) I am not too sure about the situation in Sweden. The populace is probably a lot more accepting of neo-paganism. (After all, they don't have Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.)

BB to you, too. And SMIB.
