I'm surprized I hadn't responded sooner than this.
I take public transportation. Which means I drive a 93 Olds Delta 88 to the station. Climb into a passenger rail car pushed by a F40C engine and then transfer to a Bluebird bus.

Hi Snake--
I drive a Honda Civic. The choice was made partly on price, partly on the reliability of the car, but also partly on the great mpg that it gets. Six years later, nothing has made me change my opinion about the car, and I expect that when it comes time to get a new one I'll stick with the Honda. |

I was in this forum to FINALLY commit myself on the Iraqi poll when I recalled two posts that I had made to this thread. Firstly, there was:quote: Originally posted by Computer Org
quote: Originally posted by Tokyodreamer on 04/08/03:
<snippity snip>
Should we look at an SUV driver, scowl, and think "What an asshole!"
<snip>
Yes! YES!! YES!!!
Ahhhh. But then there was also this:
quote: Originally posted by Computer Org
quote: Originally posted by Dave W. on 04/11/03:
<snip>
This guy's suggestion for safer driving was to get rid of the air bags, and replace them with big steel spikes sticking out of the middle of the steering wheel (which would basically point right at the driver's heart).
<snip>
Ahhhhh. Great personal contentment! What wonders a simple but well-thought-out suggestion can bring to an otherwise hot, damp, sticky day. Ahhhhh! A wonderful post.
Now while these two posts speak for themselves, it is worth noting that if there were no SUVs being driven (--if we all just drove small, fuel-efficient transport--) then we wouldn't have needed Iraqi oil and so we wouldn't have needed to invade Iraq.

Thinkin' 'bout some new wheels:
A '52 Ford PU with a mildly tuned, small-block, Chevy V8. The guy who has it has owed me $$$ for some time, and he sez he might deal for that and my race bike. It's a neat little rod, and I can't race the scooter any more. My daughter wants my current pickup and my old Blazer is finally running dependably. I'd have time to really make it sweet.
We'll see.

Filthy, what's up with your vintage motorcycles you have listed on your bio? My old BMW R100/7 ('78) isn't quite vintage, but it's the closest thing I got. Had it the past 13 years. Still put a few thousand on it every year doing short cruises on the weekends. Too hot for it now, here in Tejas. |

The '46 Flatrat is the ride they'll bury me with. Believe it or not, it hasn't been washed in well over 20 years and won't get washed in another 20, if I live that long.
Odd that you should ask. Just today, I was offered a '55 Panhead in a basket. One of the club members has it, and I'm really torn. I want it, but due to health problems, I might not be able to start it once I have it back together. It's hard enough to crank the Flatty, at a mere 6:1 compression. The Pan is a stroker that needs a good leg. Dollars are also a factor. Dunno, dunno, dunno.
Keep that Beemer. Those are good rides and you'd never replace it for what you'd get out of it. Rebuild it when it needs it, and stay in the wind. Me, I have little interest in new iron. Don't ask me why, I couldn't tell you.
Pretty warm here too, but nothing like y'all are getting. I'm currently not riding at all due to, again, bum legs. I hope they'll get good enough pretty soon. Wanted to make Sturgis this year, but it ain't gonna happen. Bummer.
Hang in, bro. soon enough, we'll all be bitching about how cold it is.

Although there's the practical side. I'd say go for it. Ya never know. Gota have some fun in life or what's it worth?

Well, there is some truth to that but I guess we don't want to get into a debate over Hogs vs. anything else.

If you'd have bought HDI the stock instead of the bike, you wouldn't be saying that.

Keep the Faith, baby. You'll make it.(getting your leg better) ps. I should have added, for Sturgis....there's always the sidecar. |

Fact is, Snake, I quit being concerned about what someone else rides a couple of decades or more ago. If yer happy with yer ride, I'm happy for ya!
The pickup deal fell through this morning with some hard feelings on both ends, but I've gotten the money owed, if the check is good. 'Nuff said.
I'm still agonizing over the Pan. I really can't afford it, but whaddahell. Ya goes around once. The brother who has it sez he'll hold it until my money is right. As to the stroker mill, I'll tear it down and bring the compression to probably about 7:1, and it should be easier to get along with. I'll also re-cam it to a stock FLH. It'll still be a big-inch engine, but more managable for an old cripple.
The problem with Sturgis is that I can't seem to shake loose from Buffalo Gap. The last time I was there, I never made the rally. I spent the whole time partying with the VVMC and being obnoxious in Hot Springs. Had a blast.
But alas, not this year.

Filthy, you're a bigger man than I. I may not be loyal to my spouse, but I fell in love with Harley all those many years ago and could never be with another. PS. I'm going to email you with a personal story about not being able to ride. Might make you feel better. |

Oh, I feel ok about it. Come next April, I'll have been riding Harlys for half a century -- told ya, I'm an old fart. I'm an old fart who's had a lot of joy and a lot of miles. No regrets.
If worst goes to truly bad, I'll put the Flatty in a Servicar frame (we'll build it). Might get a ride with a pussy button electric starter, or set the Pan (assuming) up with one.
That's the great thing about old Harleys. If you don't like what you have, it can be easily changed.

Cars? Who me? I was spoiled aesthetically on cars early on. My dad was an MG and Jaguar fan. (Though we were by no means rich folks. My dad was just good at restoring cars.) In the 1950s and 60s we had several MG TDs at different times, as well as a Hillman “Minx” and an Austin Healey. Jags included (at different times) 3.0 Liter sedan, XK-E 2x2, and an XK 150. Also, as I was growing up, an English Ford “Zodiac” (which was a very hot car believe it or not,) and some really weird vehicles: Renault “Fluoride” (known as the Caravel in the USA – beautiful, but a poor handler.)
My first car: Crosley “Hot Shot” which my Dad got me as a kid to learn about automobiles. First car that I drove and dated girls in – 1969 Chevelle “Malibu.” (Which I customized by painting metallic gray, with chrome piping around the side windows and wheel wells.) Car I most lusted after growing up: 1959 Maserati 3500 GT, which a friend of ours drove. (Picture a Ford Thunderbird redesigned by Satan.) Very cool, seductive, and a bit scary. I liked the way the rear fenders were flush riveted in aircraft style, and the engine sounded quite magical. Then there was a black Moto Guzzi motorcycle we owned for a while. That was a heavy ride.
Current car: 1972 BMW 3.0 CS Coupe – Cobalt blue. Dual Weber carbs, leather seats, wood dash. Manual four-speed gearbox. Alternate transportation: BikeE recumbent bicycle. The “Model T” of recumbent bikes, and a lot of fun. You sit up like in a car, but it's a two wheeled bicycle. Its slanted down to give you the Dennis Hopper chopper look (for a bike.) Coolest bike I know of. Easy on the back too. Daily “practical” car: 1986 Acura Integra hatchback.
SUVs? Hate ‘em. They are ugly metal/plastic boxes. In an unreal fair world I'd say the only people who should own them are: Old folks who need vehicles that are easy to get in and out of, and offer good visibility in traffic. (Which they do.) Folks who lead Cub Scout troops, Brownies, Little League, or other teams and organizations, etc.. Amateur astronomers who need to haul large telescopes. (Though I'm one, and don't need an SUV.) People who own flower shops, or deliver stuff. People who live on farms, or up in the Rockies and need a good four wheel drive vehicle. (A real truck is better.)
In future: Would like to own a practical electric car that looks cool and isn't a flimsy toy. More American cities should be organized so that a car is only really necessary for out-of-town driving, and public transportation is easiest and cheapest for in-the-city. Then people can collect rare old exotic cars and motorcycles or drive more highly individualized new car designs.

Hum! I guess that's ok. My dream car is and always has been a Corvette. sigh Loved them even before I knew what a motorcycle was. Someday, my dream might/will come true.

Leather seats.....YUK! My son's father wanted a car that only came in leather seats but I insisted that we get the model lower down that came with cloth. So I now drive a Toyota Camray (great car). My son however, against my wishes bought that other car and now drives a Toyota Lexis (dumb ass car), YUK! I rode in it once, not impressed, the leather seats are sickening.

I more than hate them. They are dangerous as well as ugly. The only people I think drive them are illegal aliens and women who talk on the phone all day.

I'm thinking of getting one of those hybreads. I don't care if I can go 0-60 in 5 sec. or even that it will go 50 miles an hour if I'm just using it for errands and ordinary driving. If you want to know the reason why we don't have practical cars watch the movie 'Who Killed Roger Rabit'. It might be a comedy film but it's based on facts. That's the reason we don't have mass transportation anymore. (PBS did a documentary on the same topic (car and tire companies getting rid of public transportation) but I don't know the name of it) 'Chinatown' is another that exposes the corruption in government. |

Instead of explaining, I'd thought I'd put some pics up...
Not my exact car, but the same color and model....
I travelled around Australia in one of these in the mid 1990's. 20,000 miles in 2 years (yep, the speedo was still in miles).
General Moters - Holden HQ, 1973 model. Australian built 5.0 litre V8, 308 cubes, duel fuel and a matress in the back.
Now I drive a little Ford Laser, a 1.8 litre buzzbox, great car, cheap to run. But I miss my old baby. |

Time was, when a wagon like that would have been made fun of instead of the truck things, (as I call them, others say suv) of today. Housewives with kids drove those things years ago. But the mattres in the back sounds good. BTW, what does buzzbox mean? |
