Perhaps people who are already insane go beserk in hot weather. We hear about it when they crack up. Hot weather is difficult to endure and probably brings out the worst in most people, particularly the crazies. This might be particularly so in California where the energy problems have prevented air conditioning for the citizenry.
I think that people who amass a lot of weaponry are a little strange and are most apt to misuse their *collection* when the occasion is there. They already are nutty enough to emphasize arming themselves to the hilt (for whatever reason). A hot muggy day might simply provide the opportunity to take everything to extremes.

i once read a short story by maxim gorky that revolved around the unpleasanr behavor of a russian peasant village during an unseasonably hot spell.
i believe that hot weather makes people irritable, bsaed on my personal observation, ergo it must be true.

I must disagree. This is only me but if I was going to kill someone it wouldn't be because it was hot it would be because I was upset about something they did. The mind can ignore outside influences(such as weather) IMO and make someone have tunnel vision when there is an argument going on. I live in a part of Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA that's supposed to be hot. I was afraid to move to this area because of the reputation but for several years now it hasn't been bad at all. I should have known better then to listen to people. I have NO air conditioner. But my neighbors have theirs going LOUD and clear at the least change in degree of weather. If you've ever been to a country were it really IS hot, as I have and see how people cope you'd know as I do that Americans are sissys. Geeses Krist, get a fan and stop wasting engery and stop blaming the weather on ones negitive actions. Does hot weather take away reason and knowing right from wrong? It might make someone a little edgey BUT to go as far as to kill someone,.... not an excuse. I am sorry too for that officer getting killed. This time the gun nuts have gone too far. BTW, I do not think it's wrong for people to be armed and all the debates over registration are stupid. 2nd amendment, yes! Freedom to bear arms, yes. It's just a very few who abuse that right and give the others a bad name.

If people are amassing a large collection of firearms then they really should have a psycological examination to make sure they aren't prone to using them on humans.
Quite a lot of the far right anti-government statements are hollow, particulary the one about freedom to bear arms.
Radioactive GM Crops.
Slightly above background.
Safe to eat.
But no activist would dare rip it out.

I was facetiously grasping at straws when I suggested that this outbreak of craziness might be related to hot weather; in effect, seeking a pattern where there really isn't one. You are quite right about Americans being spoiled by air conditioning. I have been to some very hot places (southern Egypt, equatorial Brazil, Vietnam) and it isn't hard to bear at all if you pay attention to how the locals do things. In this area, I have been struck by the way many businesses keep the A/C on ice cold. Yesterday, it was 105F here in Lubbock. I had to drive across town to visit a telecom company's office. It was like stepping into a freezer, actually a shock. Their thermostat must have been set at about 68. I wonder if this sudden transition from hot to cold might not bother people more than the heat itself. It would certainly keep them from getting used to it. I happened to notice in the crime scene pictures from Friday's shooting that suspect Robinson's house actually has a huge refrigerated air unit attached to the side. He had been unemployed for a while, maybe he was distraught because he couldn't pay his electric bill.

I'm a computer programmer, we are in air all day. (for obvious reasons) The only thing I think they should do is have someone with a blow torch at the front door. ("This is what it feels like outside." puffffffffffffft)

You should read Albert Camus' "The Stranger".

Of course we're sissies. We can afford to be. If the people in some of those hot countries could afford AC, I bet they would be just as sissyfied as we are.

In this case, it only takes a very few.

You are not the only one. I've heard that theory before.

Exactly. Thailand is my country of choice and people there are very casusaly dressed. No reason to be so formal all the time. Anywhere. LOL, 1st time I was there, we left Los Angeles in the middle of winter, I was wearing an overcoat, got off the plane in the middle of the night at Bangkok and a blast of hot air hit me. No one told me!!! That was the last time I ever did that again. I never take any other kind of shoe then sandals there now. Even when I leave here in winter.

I agree with you there too.

Gee Dancer, I would hope you are in air all the time, wouldn't want YOUR untimely death. I don't understand the ''puffffffffffffft''? I too worked with computers where the temp had to be kept at around 68. It wasn't all that bad, although everyone did complain. We all just wore sweaters. Big deal.

I work in an optical lab where the temperature must be kept at 67. The only time we complain is when the temperature deviates.

I did a book report about it many many years ago in a philosophy class. While I DO live 'in the moment' in many areas of my life, I'm not without the reason, to think about the consequences of my actions, should I feel like killing someone. In other words I don't want to experience being in jail, in fact I already have, so no thank you. Been there, done that.

Well, I have nothing to say to that! You sound just like those xians who think animals and everything else on this planet was put here JUST for the benifit of Man. Many people in those countries can afford A/C, btw.

In this case, it only takes a very few. [/quote] It only takes a few auto accidents, a few people triping in the bathtub, falling down stairs, and on and on. We don't live in a perfect world. Should we take away cars, people should only take showers, build one story buildings? Things happen everyday. But I'd like to believe there are more responsible people then not. In fact if there weren't we'd all be dead from gun shots now. Or hit and run cars.

Yes, accidents happen.
But one must weigh the costs of something against the benefits derived from it.
The increased mobility of cars does mean that they have a net benefit higher then their cost at the present time (it would of course go up if they didn't give off CO2).
There is also the personal choice issue. If the cost goes mostly to the many and the benefit to the few then it should be considered to be a higher cost (this is the exact opposite of how many businesses operate).
Guns put their risk onto everyone, but there is almost no benefit given to those that don't use them.
In fact there are statistics that find that every individual ownership often has more costs then benefits (as in more likely for the gun to be used for murder then self-defence).
Radioactive GM Crops.

My two cents on the gun issue. Guns don't kill people. They are inanimate objects, they are incapable of getting up of their own volition and pulling their own trigger back. People who kill people will find another way to kill a person if a gun is unavailable to them. I'd be afraid of the guy in the PI with a butterfly knife. They're deadly too.
Owning a gun is a major responsibility. Secure the weapon from the curious hands of children, teach them about the weapon when they are of an appropriate age (this is subjective since I was taught about them at the age of five). The majority of gun owners killed by their own weapons were of the opinion that the gun in and of itself would be enough deterent. If you point a weapon at someone in self defense - pull the damned trigger!
He's YOUR god, they're YOUR rules, YOU burn in hell! |

Does that include only natural persons or could you apply this rule also to lets say Nations?
I don't think that the weather or the phases of the moon are quite as big an influence on peoples sanity as some would like to belive. We invent such concepts because we dislike the idea that the gap between normal and mad is a lot smaller then we would like. People don't want to belive that such lunatics, berserks and amoks are just a small step from where they stand themselves on the sanity scale. By creating the illusion of a much bigger step to go crazy they also create the need for an explanation as to what helped bridging this gap. If you accept that we are all just a small step from going insane you don't need any fancy explanation when it happens to someone.
The idiots that think that the US or any compareble western country is in accute danger of becomming or has already become a police state, should be send somewhere where they acttually have one to learn the difference. They can take their arms allong if they think it will help some.
I personally have never quite understood the american firearms contovery. Surely the right to bear arms can't mean that every idiot can have one. And I somehow don't see how the right to bear arms equals the right to use them.
It gets even more confusing when you see the US government regulating things like crytography software on the grounds that they are weapons.
I live in a country with rather strict gun-control laws. I have never missed my right to bear arms. It is a right i gladly sacrifice for the safty of not getting shot at myself. Germanys crime rate is nothing to be proud of but it is OK compared to the US and guns don't play a major role in it. Hunting has a great tradition in Germany despite those laws. Shooting is a major and much celebrated sport here from local amateur to the olympic level. I am not a fan of either but I don't see any negative effects on them by controlling arms.
