Look into Zyban. It's cheap even without insurance. Well, relatively cheap. Something like $85 a month. With insurance it can range from free to about $10-15.

I have medical coverage through the VA...So that's not a problem. I think my biggest problems with smoking is the mental dependence on them for dealing with stressful situations. I seem to be a big stress smoker at least that's why I always start again.

That is exactly where Zyban comes in. While I have been taking this I don't think anything has stressed me out. Zombies weilding machetes could be advancing on me and I would just laugh at them = )
I did quit once a few years ago and I remember how hard that was. With Zyban it's another story. There is no stress. I know about 6 people that tied to quit using Zyban and each one has quit permanently. One guy went on it as soon as it was available and he has not smoked since. I think it was about 2 years ago.

I'm definitely going to have to talk to my doctor then. Does your smoking just taper off with the Zyban?

It tapers off, but it tapers off fast. You still have to set a date to quit and then follow through with that but there is no stress and you don't feel nicotene withdrawl. Side effects include dry mouth and walking around with a smile on your face all the time. It is an antidepressant after all. The first few days are a little weird and it's hard to sit down or sleep all night but it settles down rapidly after a week.

I wonder then how this will interact with the meds (synthroid) I'm already on. If I don't take them before 0900 I can guarantee I'll be up most of the night and as it is I only sleep four hours a night because of my meds, but that's acting on my metabolism. Um, any doctors in the house?

Wondering the same thing myself. I'm on heart medication, and I have to be very careful what I mix it with. Cold medicine makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack! I'd never talked to anyone who's taking Zyban. Might be worth checking into next time I have an appointment.
Been smoking since I was 15, and have had numerous failed attempts to quit.

Trish, it sounds like you and I are two of the biggest stress puppies here. I too smoke like a chimney when I get stressed out. I put away over a pack at work today, and I was only there from 1400-2100. But I was pinging. Can you imagine you and I in the same room, sans cigarettes, when we've just had it out with either Conspiracy Dave or Piper? We'd be peeling the wallpaper!

Yeah, they'd open the door and wonder where the fire was as smoke rolled out the door. Yikes! I keep bouncing between one and two packs a day here. Forcing myself back down, or trying to.

A question about Zyban: how hard is it to quit using that drug, once you have quit smoking? Do people start smoking after quitting Zyban?

Hey, Boron10, I'm not expecting a miracle cure, just hopefully some support without the ridicule for not being able to quit on my own from my family. They seem to think I ought to be capable of putting them down and walking away. Damn, they don't understand...

That's a good question about Zyban to...

Zyban is supposed to be non-addictive. There is no impairment or "high" feeling so I am guessing that going off it shouldn't be a problem. No one that I know that took Zyban had any trouble.

Yes people do resume smoking after the Zyban runs out but the long term success rate is still very good. The doctor told me that problem with Zyban is that it lets you quit without willpower so it's easier to resume smoking than if you quit on your own.

That being said, no one I know that finished the 3 months has resumed smoking even after 2 years.

So Lisa, you're on heart medications and you "have to be very careful what you mix with it"...but then you smoked a pack of cigarettes in 7 hours?

Are you ok up there?

Well, Randy, I've said I'm just the tiniest bit on the high strung side. The problem with my heart isn't serious or life-threatening. Mild arrythmia (sp) can just be very uncomfortable. No high blood pressure or anything like that. The only time I've ever come close to feeling like I was in trouble was once when I had a bad cold and took Nyquil. Another was when I couldn't sleep because of a headache and took Tylenol PM. I've not cared to repeat either experience.
My husband will be back from Oman on Friday. Maybe we'll try to quit together. I figure we'll be so happy to see each other after 6 months, that we'll forget to get on each other's nerves.
