This fall on UPN a new show called 'Crossing Over' will air. The commercials are full of a bunch of weeping women claiming that this charlatan has spoken with their deceased loved ones. Will this crap never end?

The only good that could come of this is that if it leaves the Sci Fi channel then they have an extra hour to show something more interesting.

No, not until enough people boycott advertisers and write letters of complaint to the network. Or we can hope that the Nielsons will be too dreadful for the program to continue.

Wish that was the case, but Crossing Over with John Edwards has been a runaway success. I've heard people talking about this show as if it were all true!!

I don't know. I'm still pessimistic in general about some things. For those that can remember back far enough, Nixon was elected President, not once but twice! And that moronic "Three's Company" was one of the highest rated sit-coms ever. Oh yeah, The National Enquirer is the largest selling newspaper in the U.S.
The American public speaks out.
Pathetic. |

As a widower, I cannot find the words to express my contempt for spiritualist scum like John Edwards. It is my understanding that the nauseating little quack James van Praagh charges $2500 an hour for a private reading. Like Edwards, he often reduces the bereaved but gullible to tears. What kind of human being could do this and charge money for it?
When spiritualists and their apologists are really cornered, they will often claim that their stories are beneficial to the bereaved even if their powers aren't real. It makes them feel better, so the lies, trickery, and financial loss are justified. In the longer term, spiritualist "contacts" would only seem to inhibit healing and acceptance, keeping the victim forever trapped in the hellish emotional limbo that follows the death of a loved one.

Call me crazy, but I would love to go on John Edward's show and ask him to "contact" my dead parents. Catch is, my parents are still alive and kicking. After he attemps to do his thing, I'd bring out my parents. SHow him up for the sharlatan he is.

Yeah, most likely on the floor.
Just thought of James Randi on the warpath with psychics, - a similar class of scum. A program shows him with three Russian women psychics. Russia has always been quite keen with these pirates. The psychics claim is to "read" photos of places, people and gather information thru their psychic powers. Part of their effort is that they "pump" the person for info. Randi states he will not discuss anything about the photo with them. It is up to them to do their unaided psychic work and tell him about this person in the photo. Randi gives them a photo of a middle age caucasion man. After a hour and several failed attempts of them trying to "innocently" quiz Randi about this pictured person, all three gave their report, of this man being a successful businessman, out going, maybe a politcal head,...etc, etc. Randi then announces the name of the man in the photo to them, "It's Ted Bundy, a serial-killer. He was executed over a decade ago."
Randi explains to the program audience how these sleeze merchants work these deals,..that they use discreet psychology, and simple probing, little questions, and throw out a lot of fluff to listen if any is picked up by the inquirer. During this psychic test, Randi did not go along with their little game. He just stayed quite. The three psychics were visibly upset with his lack of response to them. The end results were the psychics were a fraud, as they all are.

Piltdown, how about slime buzzards, or human leeches for starters?

My favorite name for them might be "inmates" but that's too much to hope for.

As an amateur magician who does this kind of thing for entertainment and points out the methods of the frauds to others, I run into this argument a lot. The sad part is that I get it mostly not from the frauds (who defend themselves to the end) but from my own friends and relatives who say things like "What does it hurt? It makes them feel better, right, so it's okay."
I finally found a response that has gotten them to reject this justification. I tell them this:
"Okay, by that reasoning, it's okay for me to set up shop as a channeler and speaker-with-the-dead, right? You know that I'm just a magician and can't really talk to the dead, but you're saying that as long as it makes her feel good, I can charge your grandmother $1000 to talk to her dead husband and parents. Tell you what--I'll give you 20% for all your relatives that I channel for. After all, they'll feel better."
Oddly, no one has accepted the 20%.
My kids still love me. |
