"The public loves authority", sounded a little like something a Democrat might say, good thing I asked.
Naw. Just look how folks loooove to quote statistics. When something like that comes on the news, I always ask, what was the sampling size and demographic makeup of those polled? When any "authority" is quoted on a subject, I want to know: is this subject this person's speciality? For how long? Published? Peer reviewed? IOW, I'm a real pain in the ass to watch the news with. Ah Gees! Now you tell me. No wonder no one likes to watch with me either. I thought it was normal to question everything. |

quote: The Discovery Stores are supposed to selling things that promote learning about science. When they sell such things as magnetic insoles to promote pain relief without saying that this is an example of quack medicine, they have, in essence, given there seal of approval to an item that has not been shown to be of any therapeutic value. In other words, they are pushing pseudo science in a science store. They are selling fiction as non fiction. Get it?
Kil:
Thank you! This (The Skeptic Friends Network) happens to be a skeptics' site (duh!) and we might expect fellow skeptics here to be nauseated by this pandering of pseudoscientific merchandise by the Discovery Channel and the Discovery Store (and by anybody else, for that matter). That is, supposedly, why we access this site. which is a site to discuss the anti-scientific stupidities running rampant throughout society.
I intend to write the Discovery Store and to do whatever I can to make fun of The Discovery Channel's attempt to bamboozle the public. I do not watch television (boring) because it panders to imbeciles so much of the time; consequently, I miss most of the horror stories like this. Thank you for letting us know. I shall be sure to bring this up with my skeptics society at our next meeting.
Now where is my box of lucky charms when I need them?

Snake, I think an important distinction must be brought up when you inject politics and political philosophies into this particular discussion.
In my opinion, there is nothing at all "Democratic" in being offended that bookstores, Discovery Channel, et. al., are being horribly irresponsible when they put crap in the science section. Political philosophies come into play when you start talking about what should be done about it.
Writing letters to the offending parties, boycotting their stores (or channels), making your disapproval public, etc. are perfectly fine, and certainly not indicative of political ideology.
Start calling on government to pass laws and regulations telling businesses what they can put where, this is where you cross over into commie pinko thinking, and feel free to rip into them!

Since you addressed that to ME. I guess I have to answer your post. WHAT THE HELL are you talking about? That doesn't make sense. I think what you are doing is what I see many people do, pick on a sentence or small comment and twist it around to be the main subject. Lighten up and or explain more clearly what you are saying. Where did you get that idea about having govenment tell people what to do? And what do you mean 'rip into them'? |

Oh boy... I guess the two smilies weren't enough... I'm not going to apologize for you not being able to understand my meaning, since I gave you those two smilies, and I really don't think my point was hard to understand. But I'll try and explain.
You were asking Lisa if she was a Democrat. You asked this because you linked what she said with Democratic philosophies. You also said earlier: quote: I just realized something, YOU PEOPLE are missing the point ONCE AGAIN.
I was pointing out that this is not correct, that the point is that it is valid to be offended by people irresponsibly peddling nonsense. It is not valid (IMO) to ask government to step in when nonsense is peddled (unless there is direct threat and/or harm). Thus pointing out to you why linking what Lisa said to Democratic philosophies was incorrect. But I added a smilie at the top, and a smilie at the end, to let you know I wasn't trying to be insulting, and was just making a friendly comment.
I believe it is you who should do the lightening up.

I am with you people! This is total nonsense to see at "science" based store. Its not like they don't have these cuckoo New Age shops for the people who buy into it(literally!) Thats why they peddle this stuff--to make a fast buck. Maybe they should call themselves "pseudoscience" based stores. |

That's ok. As long as you know I wasn't trying to offend you.

The thought never crossed my mind, I thought we all are having a disscuission. But thanks anyway. See how men are so much more polite, thanks. N. ps. Maybe next time you should put 10 or more faces on so the point is not overlooked. |

A new store called the Discovery Center has opened in the bible belt of Abilene, Texas. I should point out it is not affiliated with the Discovery channel or its retail outlets. Just that it's peddling nonsense.
.....from the news link:
http://www.texnews.com/1998/2001/local/sci0802.html
"We want to provide a place where people can come and learn the truth about science from a biblical standpoint," Carolyn Walden said. "So many people only hear one side of the story, so they think that's all there really is. We want to help people learn otherwise."
In other words, Ya'll come on in! Just leave your brain at the front door.
On second thought, the magnetic insoles would fit right in this caliber of a store.

You should not use such complimentary ad hominems as *yellow dog* when thinking about Republicans. Think about the feelings of the poor *yellow dogs* of the world when they read that. Would they (the *yellow dogs*, poor things) enjoy being compared to Republicans? For crying out loud! Have a heart, will you!
Poor, poor *yellow dogs*...
