Yes, but he was a bit of a Luddite, too. Actually, it wasn't 20 years ago, but more like 15, and if I remember correctly, one of the last things he said to me was that he'd call me, and now, 15 years later, I've still got the same phone number. Seriously, my slight curiosity about his viewpoint isn't enough of a motivator to get me to track him down.quote: Anarchism, being No government, is what I said Socialism is, therefore I guess one could say they are synonyms.
Well, I was trying to point out that, to Wells at least, they were not synonyms.

quote: Actually, anarchism, according to the anarchists I know, is the rejection of illegitimate authority. Legitimate authority is acceptable.
That's correct, Gorgo. There can also be distinctions made between authority giving invested power, and authority that comes with knowledge and experience. I have no problems with a well-qualified farmer telling me the best way to grow crops (though I might still question that from ecological perspectives), but certainly have a problem with my government telling me I have to bear arms in defence of the State (for example), and forcing me to do so.

They're not. One major distinction is that almost all forms of anarchism reject the State as a means of organising society, and seek to destroy it. Many (though not all) forms of socialism see the State as a tool to bring about equity in society.
Anarchists of whatever stripe would not generally see a socialist state as a staging post to an anarchist utopia, but would actually oppose it from the outset. It's why socialists usaully shoot anarchists before they get around to the capitalists (if they ever do) |

Don't write the Soviet Union off just quite yet.
