And, on a relevant note:
quote: From my frame of thinking it is so obvious that the one true God of the Holy Bible exists that I don't feel it is badgering to support the truth on a secular message board. Now if someone comes to a Christian message board to try to change peoples belief in God When they know he exists I would consider that badgering.
I love the double-standard's justification here. I at least know that what I do on religous boards IS badgering. Also, hopefully a little persuading.
Then there's the assumption that atheists "know God exists"! http://www.rr-bb.com/showthread.php?postid=1216938#post1216938
Anyway, this may give an insight as to why they come here, and get so mad when we go there. |

I like the mixed-up capitalization in the last half of the last quoted sentence, too.
That atheists know God exists isn't an assumption on that poster's part: it's the plain and simple Truth-with-a-capital-T, I'm sure. Everybody knows that "the one true God" exists, even those heathen Buddhists. Those pesky atheists say otherwise either because of Satan, or just to be contrary. Either way, they're goin' t'Hell.quote: ...this may give an insight as to why they come here...
This is getting a bit far off for this thread, but out of curiosity, any idea how many have come here, specifically, from RR, specifically, and actually posted something here? |

I meant "they" in the general sense. Sorry for the confusion. I was just making a generalization as to the motives of all the religious people who come here.
On the other hand, I do know that "Magus55" from RR posts on Internet Infidels, and "billiefan2000" posts on JREF. Another guy, whose name I forget, used to post on "jewsforjudaism" talk board.
Then there's the many times on RR I hear of them bragging that they got booted off of other sites (never named, but most are described as Roman Catholic or Adventist sites). |

Nonono, I had a feeling you meant "they" generally, but I've also got a feeling that someone from RR follows their logs back to your links here, at least every once-in-a-while. That they haven't descended here en masse to take you to task is only a little surprising. Perhaps they are inobservant. |

I no longer bother to post on the so-called Christian boards. I end up catching too much illogical abuse. 'Though I must say that TheologyWeb has gotten interesting of late, as Glen Morton has joined Joe Meert, and some very knowledgable others, and are now making Sarfati, et. al., scramble. Makes good, if sometimes a little tedious (ya hear that, Socratism?), reading.
But, back to Phred's Phallic Phantasies:
I and others really have trouble taking this turkey seriously, and that is a mistake. It is exactly this sort of attitude that has led to the persecution of peoples throughout time, and indeed, led to the crucifiction of Christ himself. We are fortunate that he and those like him have as yet only a small influence. This can easily change and even appears to be doing so, here & there. More and more, we seem to be tolorating intolorance. I even see it here in the popularity of one of our revival preachers, a man not yet in Phelp's class, but working on it. I am saddened that some of my believer neighbors attend his rants (that's what they are!) whenever he hits town. I'm not sure he even has a congregation of his own -- just preaches by invitation. He even has a tent, and tent revivals are still very popular (and, I must admit, fun). I caught a piece of one of his sermons at one, but left before they passed the plate.
If these people gain much more power and influence than they already have, we're in trouble.
But back to Fearless Fred, the Footpad Dread (apologies to Walt Kelly): I have heard it said that if someone demonstrates a truely vitriolic hatred of something, that person is most likely "in the closet" and afraid to come out. Thus, he/she is torn between natural inclinations and massive guilt for feeling those inclinations. And, given a certain personality type, you end up with.... Fred.
I don't think that's entirely amature psycho-babble. You could also end up with Joe McCarthy, or similar.
So, which penis does Fred yearn so tragicly for that he'd build a monument to it? Having given the matter no thought at all, I've come up with, Matthew Shepard's. Who else?

Yeah, maybe Shepard once spurned his advances in a men's room, or something. |

The courts can still be an effective weapon against Rev. Phelps.
Somebody in the Shepard family should've applied to trademark and reserve all the exclusive copyrights to all of Matthew's name, images, videos, etc. I remember Larry Flynt did this and so was able to sue Rev. Falwell for copyright violation. At the very least this could place a very serious dent on Rev. Phelps' schemes.

Hi blues, and welcome to Septic Fiends!
yeah, yours is not a bad idea. Tie the bastard up in court until he croaks! Not too shabby at all, espeaclly if he hates courtrooms as much as I do (2 jury duties, one a rape trial and the other for a car thief. Have also been the defendant. Fuck courtrooms!).
Unfortunatly, in a hugely stressful time, such things are not thought of by most people. Larry Flint however, due to the business he's in, thinks of them all the time.
I wonder, is it too late to copywrite? Or failing that, would there be grounds for a slander suit?
Interesting thought.

IIRC, John Kobler's biography of Al Capone said that his widow, Mae, sucessfully sued the producers of the TV show "The Untouchables", on the grounds that they were using her late husband's name and likeness for commercial purposes.
Perhaps Phelps' use of Matthew Shepherd's name to promote his "church" is similarly actionable.
Revulsion for Phelps aside, there really oughta be a way to keep the names and likenesses of dead private citizens from being fair game for hucksters and fanatics. |

Even, I think, if someone manages to topple Phelps's homophobic fantasies in stone, this will be veiwed by his sheep as something like a victory. Just reading the thread at RR that The_ignored posted, it's easy to see how these people veiw themselves. They want to be martyrs. If they can't have their way, they become victims of persecution and intolerance.
