This isn't so much skeptical as a general-interest trivia question I've been wondering about:
Has there ever been a willing, able, and elligible incumbent U.S. President, Senator, or Representative who did not receive his/her party's nomination when time for re-election came around?
In other words, has anyone done something which, while not enough of a bone-headed move to get them thrown out of office (or at least resign), and/or thrown into jail, has made them so incredibly un-re-electable that their party ditched them in favor of someone else?
If so, what was the story?

Yes, and recently, too.
George Ryan was willing and able to run. The stigma of the ongoing "licenses for bribes" and his "campaign promises were made to be broken" speech made him universally hated throughout Illinois. He was talking about running. Then the Republican leadership told him the facts of life and he decided not to run. He is still under investigation for his part of licenses for bribes. It's only a matter of time before he gets arrested for it.
For our friends outside the state of Illinois or the US, licenses for bribes is a scandal within Illinois whereby George Ryan's campaign for governor pressured Secretary of State employees (Deptartment of Motor Vehichles) to purchase tickets that then they had to sell. (George Ryan was Secretary of State) They were not allowed to give them back. Some automobile dealerships were likewise pressured to buy tickets under threats that their business licensing requests would be turned down or prestigous low number plates would be issued them in consideration for contributing. The Secretary of State employees, in order to cover the $100 USD ticket costs, started accepting bribes to issue driver's licenses to passenger and commercial drivers without requiring the standard testing.
One of these commercial drivers that purchased thier license in this way jackknifed his truck in California due to lack of any training what-so-ever and caused a pile up that killed a dozen or more people. Another commercial driver did not do a proper safety inspection on his trailer and a piece fell off striking a minivan in Wisconsin. The van burned, killing six children. The parents were only able to save a few kids. The New Delhi Driving School paid a driver's licensing station to automatically pass drivers that had no training what-so-ever and did not even know the basics of driving in this country. Over 700 licenses were recalled. 300 submitted for testing. 70% failed. |
