I'm PruplePanther who long ago posted as Gallium Arsenide over in the BBQ Pit on the SDMB. I was BANNED on my first day by The Great Bodini, Lord and Mistress of the Pit. Bad spelling was the reason, I think. Pluss I crossed one of the High Moguls of the Pit, a poster named gobear who hated teenagers. And I wasn't even a teenager. I only started one thread, saying that written history was written by the victors and couldn't be trusted. Poor balding gobear had a snitfit and we got into a name calling match. I called him Go! Bears! since the SDMB is in Chicago and gobear was from Washington, DC. Well there it is. All of the dirt on poor Gallium Arsenide. An appeal to TubaDiva the Omniscient got me nothing but scorn. I've learned to spell rite when I right and to use a dictionary and hope that I won't get banned here. It's awful to be banned.

Wait. That's not spelled rite! It's "I've learned to spell WRITE when I right." And in my very first posting. Wow. ;)

Why do we say "SUMMON THE WITAN!" and use just one 't' but say "History is written." with 'tt'? They both sound the same and they are both English.

Thanks. It's good to be here. Was gud thing to giv up modern chat and learn the antique way of spelling words. In Chinese they don't have letters to bother with.

Greetings Pruple Panther! Welcome to Septic Fiends!

I too, have deserted SDMB, but only because I became bored with it. I'm in agreement that there is something of a clique there. Whaddafork, it's no big deal with me. I still drop by and look, now and again.

I, the local grammer nazi, do not give a rat's ass about your speling as long as your posts are at least ledgable and their content relevent. If they are not, I, and the rest of the denizens of this small refuge for the sane, will gently remind you with a mortar attack upon your cat.

Hello Pruple.
When I saw the word purple, I had to look at that post. I adore the color purple.
Then, when I read that you'd been banned from some...was it a web site? I don't know of that which you speak. Anyway, I too was banned from an e-group and never allowed to answer back to what they said to me, couldn't log into it again. So I started my own group and vow never to ban anyone, save for the most outragous offensive posts, which hasn't happened yet.
I think people should be free to say whatever they want. Politically incorrect is a bunch of bull. And when someone on a message board attacks ones spelling above other points that shows that the replier hasn't much to say back, IMO. It's like calling someone a nasty name just because you don't agree them. That's stupid.
So I hope you won't let anyone intimidate you and continue to say what you think.

Walt, I'm learning Thai, it's easier than English too.....sort of!
So is German, which I'd like to study again. Spanish is even easier for spelling, but I refuse to speak that.

I just find it curious that someone would introduce him/herself with little more than a tale about being banned from another message board with largely the same overall goals as this one.

It's even more curious when one cannot find any trace of a poster named "Gallium Arsenide" over there, within the last four-plus-a-hair years. If the banning occured so long ago, what does it matter other than to show people you can carry a grudge? Or, if the banning were more recent, but for an offense so great that the SDMB admins chose to delete the thread, why would you suggest it was for bad spelling, instead?

I'm skeptical of claims of crappy behaviour on the part of the people who moderate the SDMB, since it's been my first-hand experience that they often bend over backwards to try to fix problems before resorting to bans.

Thanks. sorry, tho. No cat, just lizards. Pleze dont send a mortar atak against my lizards.

Hey, Snake. The SDMB wouldn't let me log in either but only after a couple of months so I got to see what they said about me. My thread saying that history was bunk lasted and went on for a couple of more pages. Someone else started an entirely new thread just about me and it went into the second page. I think it was the aging, teenager hating gobear, a grand cliquer in the Pit. All I could do is sit there and watch it all. They really made a lot of fun of me. No defense allowed on the SDMB. Ugh. Their address is http://straightdope.com but filthy is right, it's really not worth going there unless you like a board full of NAZI fascists who think they are the cat's meow as my great great great great grandmother used to say.

Purple,
Welcome to the board. While history is written by the victors, it should be, IMHO, taken with a grain of salt instead of out of hand dismissed. OK, so it's a grain of salt the size of Montana. Especially the further back in history you go.

I can read hUB'ish, so you probably won't stump me. I may ask you to clarify points or explain words that I don't understand. I won't tac-nuke your lizards because of it.

I dunno Dave but you sound an awful lot like the NAZI bastids over in the BBQ Pit on the SDMB.

I posted the dirt because I didn't wanted all the dirty laundry hidden in the hamper.

Little more than a tale? You must have missed my "I only started one thread, saying that written history was written by the victors and couldn't be trusted." Boy, did THAT raise the hackles over at the SDMB.

Don't know why the search didn't work. I post from a public library and a couple of months after I was BANNED the SDMB BANNED the entire library from even looking at their message board. Think that it was last summer but all my SDMB emails were in my emailbox at Cosmiverse.com which seems to have dropped off the web. :( My handle Gallium Arsenide was in the subject title of at least 2 threads, one in the Pit and one in Tubadiva's Admin place.

You can say all you want to about their admin bending over backward but the only bending over they did for me was to get a big thingy to stick up my backward. TubaDiva did answer one of my pleading emails saying that she would look into the strange case of Poor, Pitiful Gallium arsenide but. Nothing.

All I know is that I wanted to see both sides of the story, so I went over to the SDMB and searched on "Gallium Arsenide" and some simple variants as a user, and found nothing. I searched for various combinations of 'history', 'written', 'victors' and 'trusted', and came up with nothing which Gobear seemed to get upset about at all.

I've just now gone back and did two searches, one for 'gallium' and one for 'arsenide', in thread titles only, from any date, in any forum: "Sorry - no matches."

The real fact of the matter is that there have been several threads on the SDMB about how written history couldn't be trusted, and few of them have "raised hackles." I don't know why you think it would.

The only part of your entire story that I can verify at all is the bit about the SDMB banning a library. I was told they banned a library's IP address because of a group of teenagers who were apparently posting lots of inflammatory nonsense while swapping user names and passwords amongst themselves, all of which is clearly prohibited by the SDMB's "don't be a jerk" rule (first and foremost), and also prohibited by other more explicit terms of use of their message board.

If those rules sound Nazi-like to you, you're going to have a rather rude awakening when you get older.

Lizards, eh? What species?

I do wildlife rescue and re-hab, specializing in reptiles; further specializing in venomous. Currently, I have some 10 hot snakes in permenent residence, mostly used for educational presentations. I also do problem snake removal, or did before becoming a little too arthritic to be crawling around under houses.

Have one lizard; a tokay gecko that was wished off on me a couple of years ago, and I found a home for. It's back for a while and I am lizard-sitting. If anything, it's temper has become more foul and it's appetite more formidable.

Don't know filthy. They just run all over the yard, in the house, up and down the walls. Mine might be geckos and not lizards. They are only a few inches long. Would u do a search in SDMB on Gallium arsenide or its chemical nickname GaAs? I can't believe that the wonderful TubaDiva hates me so much that she would erase all traces of me from the whole board. I remember the time because I got into a shouting match with gobear for misspelling "plagerism". He ordered me to write "plagiarism" 25 times and I did. Using cut and paste. Ha. About 2 months later the BIG plagiarism flap hit starting with the historian Doris Goodwin. Thanks for help if u can. I can't get into the board since the whole library has been banned by Tuba d' Diva.

Yeah, sure. I'll check it out.

As to the lizards, give me a description and your location (just the state should do it), and I may well be able to smack an ID down on the little buggers.

Okay, I've searched for:

- Gallium
- Arsenide
- Gallium AND arsenide
- history, victors, etc.
- gaas
- plagiarism AND gobear
- plagerism AND plagiarism
- doris AND goodwin (just to try to get a sense of the timing)

The last three were pretty easy, and turned up nothing which would help.

Remembering the time the SDMB was hacked, and wound up losing four months or so of threads, I even went to BoardReader and ran some of the searches there. It turned up nothing new.

I remember someone on the SDMB telling someone else to spell something correctly 25 times, and the response was a blurt of cut-and-paste, but the memory is dim, as if it had happened a few years ago.

I've now spent somewhere between four and five hours on this problem. I believe it to be unsolvable.

TubaDiva is not solely to blame. The decision to ban an entire IP would be vigorously discussed amongst all the admins there, and perhaps even the staff of the Chicago Reader, which owns the board.

Oh, by the way: geckos are lizards. Fun reptile story: A coworker of mine went on a business trip to Australia, somewhere out in the middle of the place. Had geckos in his motel room. One fell from the ceiling onto his bed while he was trying to relax and watch TV. Scared the pants off him 'til he figured out what it was. Woke the next morning to find a king brown snake sunning itself outside his door. So he closed the door and called the desk clerk. They sent a maid with a broom to shoo it away.
