Would u do a search in SDMB on Gallium arsenide or its chemical nickname GaAs? I can't believe that the wonderful TubaDiva hates me so much that she would erase all traces of me from the whole board. I remember the time because I got into a shouting match with gobear for misspelling "plagerism". He ordered me to write "plagiarism" 25 times and I did. Using cut and paste. Ha. About 2 months later the BIG plagiarism flap hit starting with the historian Doris Goodwin. Thanks for help if u can. I can't get into the board since the whole library has been banned by Tuba d' Diva.
My suffering in pursuit of Truth has been vast. I have climbed mountains, barely able to breath from the thin airs, waded leech-infested swamps filled with crocodiles, fought leagons of rabid fundies and even decended into the very bowels of Hell! I have....
Actually, I've done exactly jack-shit. I've merely opened a thread in the SDMD BBQ Pit requesting info. Here 'tis:
Gallium Arsenide, anyone?
Someone joined our litle skeptic's forum with a rather woeful tale of being banned here. Being skeptics, one of our members did a search here and found nothing. It was as if Gallium Arsenide had never existed in these realms or this Pit.
So, in an attempt to get at the Truth, I'm asking for some Straight Dope from those involved.
The story, if I have it right, is that he got into an altracation with gobear and a couple of others over spelling (??).
Whaddafuck happened?
Many thanks in advance,

Well, my thread has pulled in a few replies, and most of them are kinda vague -- "I think I remember him........" and so forth, along with a few, smart-assed comments. There were a couple of accusations of trollism. I got the impression that PruplePanther's tenure at SDMB, however brief, was some time ago.
In any event, how he behaves here, not what SDMB says, is what's important, yes?
We shall see.

I pretty sure some of the terseness you received in response probably derives from not emailing one of the mods with the question. Oh, well...quote: In any event, how he behaves here, not what SDMB says, is what's important, yes?

Ah. Refreshing the SDMB thread, Lynn has confirmed my email hypothesis.
And given that "Gallium Arsenide" was also "Sea Sorbust," our very own Computer Org has verified the library story already. Unfortunately, since sock-puppetry is strictly prohibited at the SDMB, it seems that PruplePanther began this thread with a misrepresentation of the likely reason for her banning over there. Bad spelling, indeed... |

You're wrong, gobear-oid. I asked Computer Org to help me. He's smart and puffy and mighty. He did with a thread in Tuba d' Diva's own forum called "'The strange case of GaAs' or 'something dire that I can't remember'".A month or so after I got banned and minor threats back and forth between The Big TD and C.O., she banned everyone in sight.

Well, since you said you're not a teenager, and since I haven't complained about your spelling, what do either of those things have to do with you? If you're going to play the victim, at least have the sense to pretend to be victimized by something that would affect you. |

This thread gets me yawning.
Ok, I don't have to read it, but hey, wouldn't a better introduction have been a relevant post filled with insight into what-ever-the-thread-is-about, in one of the other threads?

Man, Dave! You got some patience, and a bit of web savvy. I never could have lasted five minutes doing that little investigation. This is the only board I have the time, (or the inclination), to post to. Plus, my actual web time outside of my personal research is quite limited. Sometimes, I really envy a few of you guys. (I did post to JREF a few times under the name Lazarus, but too many of those folks are more interested in winning the argument than discussing the issue)
That said, I don't really care about the past of any poster. In the anonymous world of the internet, I consider all personal histories to have a significant probability of deception, or carefully controled revelations.
So, PurplePanther...welcome. If you have valid arguments on certain issues, I will be happy to read them. If you are a troll, I think you would have to commit a mortal sin to actually be banned from this board. However, most of the other members, myself included, would be more than happy to rip you a new asshole if you step too far out of line. So, enjoy.....
Filthy, my wife has this little brown type of a dessert dwelling lizard that has this fat spiny tail. The little guy likes to sling it around, too--At the cats, dogs and ferrets anyway.
Yeah, we got a zoo around hear. Seven four-legged critters, and four of the two-legged variety. |

I sez what Doc said. Onward to bigger and worser things.
Tim, the lizard is oviously not a native species (nothing anywhere near the Big Easy matches that descripiton). Where is it from?
I myself have always wanted to keep Gilas, but they're too expensive. Also Ozzy Molocs, but they are almost never exported (the way it should be, and damned well told, sez I).

filthy, you'd love it down here in Oz, we have more reptilian critters than you can poke a stick at. Actually all our fauna is quite strange, goes with being an isolated continent for years I suppose.
And Dave, as Tim said, I admire your persistence as well. I envy the people that have the time to do all that stuff. I'm too busy working my arse off to pay our mortgage and keep up with my wife's fascination for antique furniture!!!!!

Sometimes, I really envy people who can "just drop it." Sometimes, my tenacity makes me lose sleep. There's always that "one more try" to be had, that one other web site I haven't looked at, etc..
Also, doing this stuff "correctly" involves treading that very fine line between benign neglect of, and abject disregard for, one's spouse, children, and pets.

Well, three things that help are (A) a job with very rigid hours, (B) a lack of the ability to find something to do in my spare time which could generate enough income to pay for anything, and (C) condo living, where I don't have to clutter my weekends with mowing the grass or other such concerns.
In other words, I really do have spare time. Time I can choose to spend doing as I like, without any nagging feelings of "well, I should be doing thus-and-such." If I feel like working on my web site, I do so. If I feel like holding forth in these forums, I do so. If I feel like tweaking my plans for world domination, I do so.
Usually, while on my way home from work, I'm thinking about what I feel like doing that particular night (after the kid goes to bed). Doesn't always work out, since contrary to my "benign neglect" joke above, family and other concerns really do take precedence over my time. But if I can get an hour or two here or there, every other day or so, I feel pretty good about it. Of course, when I blow that time on wild-goose chases, I can get a little irate. Speaking of which...
Tim wrote:quote: That said, I don't really care about the past of any poster.
To be honest, what I was first concerned with was my impressions of the SDMB moderators. If, for example, the banning went down as PruplePanther implied, then perhaps I had them all wrong (or they'd gone over the edge in the past few months). It was only after quickly not finding confirmation of her story that the whole thing started to become a challenge which had to be figured out. It took off from there.
I'm all for ignoring past acts, but this particular poster began saying things about her past (without prompting) which indicate - to me, at least - that she is currently dissembling about that past. It doesn't bode well, and only gets worse when she compared me to Nazis, for no other reason than I didn't take her word for what happened, however off the wall it sounded.
I am hoping to be proven wrong about those first impressions, but can't stifle my skepticism.

He compared you to Nazis?
when i was GaAs over on the sdmb i was NOT a sock puppet of Sea Sorbust who got her name by a twist on a bad astronomy board thread called "Mars or Bust". Sea Sorbust is female where i am a male. Sea Sorbust is very dark where i am a tanned white. no sock puppets.
ur right that i wasn't a teenager when i got banned but during the thread gobear dicided that i was and beat me up without mercy. but if u dont mind quick-spell and teenagers then all is OK. No?
the past doesnt matter? IIRC the title of my sdmb thread was something like "History is twisted by the victor's historians". maybe gobear was a historian and thought i was a high school sophomore flunking history.
I STILL dont know y The Bodini banned me without warning. ur wrong about the sockpuppet thing tho. Sea Sorbust didnt get banned until TubaDiva decided that Computer Org and Sea Sorbust and Galactic Constant were all sock puppets weeks later. They werent but what does truth matter when the victorious sdmb admins and mods can write the history any way they want.
getting banned on my first day at the sdmb was awful. one of the worst things to hapen to me in my short life. i will try hard to be good here and not get banned.

I ran a sock puppet over there some years ago, the only time I ever did it. I never got caught, probably because I found it difficult to stir up the sort of dissention that causes flame wars. A few, outrageous comments was all I was really capable of. I soon enough became bored with it and not too long afterward, I pretty much abandoned SDMB for that same reason.
So anyhow, again, welcome. Looking forward to your input.
