Where punishment must fit the faith

By Joyce Howard Price
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

A state prison near Jacksonville, Fla., has become the nation's first "faith-based" jailhouse, combining spirituality with hard time.
At the revamped 800-man Lawtey Correctional Institution in northern rural Florida, inmates who are nearing release and have had clean records for at least the past 12 months will be involved in activities such as prayer sessions, religious studies, choir practice and religious counseling seven days a week.

IIRC, Charles Colson (one of the Nixon crew convicted in the Watergate cover-up) has been doing prison ministry ever since, well, since he got out of prison.

I wonder if he's involved.

BTW, one definite positive effect of Gerald Ford's pardoning of Richard Nixon was that it spared us the risk that Tricky Dick might have found Jebus in jail.

Pretty good. I wonder if we should let them turn all the prisons into churches and watch the recidivism rate stay the same or rise. The only problem with that is most people would only go to prison on Easter and Christmas.

The governor says he and his older brother, President Bush, share the view that the best way to rehabilitate criminals is to "lead them to God."

Yeah! God will fix them thar criminals! Why, it worked for Timothy McVeigh. And the Klu Klux Klan. And Catholic preists that molested little boys. And <insert morally corrupt Bible-thumping criminal of your choice here>.

We're a religious nation. Most people claim religious affiliation, and most of those claim to be Christian. Yet we've always had a high crime rate. Does it occur to the Brothers Bush that God isn't the answer because faith isn't the problem?

Maybe, Mr. Jebster, things like racism, drug use, income disparity, unemployment, and child abuse MIGHT play a BIGGER ROLE in causing crime than whether or not someone sits in a church once a week. Ya think?

I must be in a bad mood. I'm going for a walk in the rare Seattle snow and try not to think about the fact that there are TWO Bushes currently fucking up my country. I'm so glad I don't live in Florida.

Sure, we're a religious country. We're also a drug abusing country. Maybe we should have drug-based prisons. Wait! We already do!
