Please welcome Donna Svabik, the newest addition to the SFN Staff. She is joining me as co-moderator of the medicine folder. She is very active in the fight against health fraud. She has collected a list of over 2000 websites containing questionable medical products or procedures, a valuable resource that I have used. She endorses the work of Quackwatch and the National Council Against Health Fraud and posts on the healthfraud list and altvetskept.
I'm sure she will be an asset here at SFN.

Donna, welcome. More need to speak out against quackery. Wish me luck today. I picked up a local newspaper yesterday and just about went ballistic. There's a whole page spread about some guy practicing some sort of "ancient" oriental medicine. I'd never heard of this particular brand, but the tune was familiar. He releases "blocked energy channels" etc. Sound familiar? The author of this piece was not only credulous, he was downright worshipful. At the top of the page, there was a blurb that said "Questions or comments, please call ..and the number". I think I'll ring this fool up and ask a few questions about peer review and double blind studies. (Sarcasm alert) I wonder which issue of JAMA they were published in? Lisa

First of all, Lisa..a most sincere thank you!....Best of luck to you in your quest with this "instructor" today.. Oh boy!, where does one begin discussing all the "New-Age" awareness freaks out here that have embraced 2,000 [and older] year old practices?...I have such a collection of sites depicting various "religions", the over-lapping into "wellness" [health] is unbelievable!..Kil has all 1,600+ sites I have documented through countless hours of research. [I have in excess of 2,000, but not all are organized for e-mail submitting]I had a substantial mail string at the time I was finding site after site. Unfortunately, due to a computer melt-down, I lost most of these URL's....since the line of these religious/health modalities are overlapped, it would be difficult to say if it was "Aryuvedic Medicine" laced with "Reflexology", tinged along with a little "Tai Chi", endorsing "Naturopathy", as proclaimed by the "Great"[sarcasm intended] Deepak Chopra...it's such a hodge-podge of swill, Lisa..I frequently *did* take a daily dose of Advil's for the pressures of finding all this. [PS:..are you aware of the term, "Chakras?"..did you know, that the pubic bone "Chakra" is indeed red!...::gags::]
Best Regards to you, Donna Svabik

Heh!...Lisa?..you'll most likely get the "standard answer"..."Just read the testimonials"...{NOT scientific data}, "Purchase the Book"..{ANYONE can write a book, big deal}.."According to the great Swami"..{Antecdotals:..NOT scientific data}..You'll get the runaround,Lisa..I'm sure you already know this, too...while we're at it, [this quackhunting quest]..*this* following site is certainly one of the most exploitive ones I have come across in a while..advocating those damned crop circles again!!... Well, first, I am appalled by that site. Second, I want to own the first box of "Crop Circle Cereal." In a perfect world I would get to eat my "crop circles" with a bent spoon....

Hehehehehe..ok, Kil! ..I cannot help but wonder if these are better than wheaties?..ok..now..if you thought the crop circle cereal concept was bad..how about this one?:
URL: http://www.insightessences.com/index.html
Description: "Essences from Crop Circles"...here's the pitch, Skeptics:
"Insight Essences are precious elixirs for all who journey the path of The Heart. They heal, transform and set free. The possibilities are enormous and applications vary. However you choose to use your essences a new level of intelligence becomes available allowing insight and the remembrance of who you are. Individuals use essences to go internal and deep or for lucid dreaming. Groups also utilize these to realize a collective intent. In vibrational medicine they enhance other therapies and remove disturbing energetic conditions. Teachers and parents are using essences to create an opening. Taking Insight Essences will help you see the unseen, feel the unfelt and forgive the unloved."
Now *where* would one put this stuff to get all the effects above?..what exploitation!
Regards, Donna

Hi Donna,
Welcome to the forum. I am quite interested in medical quackery and read both quackwatch and nutriwatch often.
My wife is a nurse at the local hospital here and the strangest thing that I ever heard about quackery there had to do with another nurse. It seems that this nurse believed that she had some special healing touch thing and attempted to use it on a patient. My wife's supervisor had a great response to this. "There will be no voodoo nursing in this department". Do you have any links to sites dealing with quackery from a nursing perspective?
Greg.

Thank you for the welcome, Greg....I am happy to hear that you are interested in learning about medical quackery..I will attempt to locate everything I have on what you're looking for, plus contact a fellow healthfraud list member who is a nurse. Perhaps she can lend some insight into this, as well...I'll be in touch with you soon!....Best Regards, Donna

Therapeutic touch or "TT" was conceived by a nurse, as I understand it. It was debunked by a 12 year old girl. There should be many critiques of the practice. I suggest going to Quackwatch for at least one low down. http://www.quackwatch.com/

Good for that supervisor. I used to have respect for the nursing profession, my mother was a RN. But now, I'm not so sure they get the best education. My X-sister is also a nurse. Haven't spoken to her for years('cause she's a bitch, but that's another story). She was into the Bach Flower Remedies. Herbs for curing all sorts of problems from what I understand. This has nothing to do with nursing but also she once told me she went to a psychic, paid $20. And was very impressed by what she was told. I said they are all phony, she understood but she said this one was different, she really did know everything. Hey, I tried!

Let me just toss out a guess here...she was told she's kind, compasionate, and cares for others, yet has steely resolve when confronted with problems. Keep trying Snake, occasionally someone listens. A friend of mine used to whip out the old checkbook for every quack diet that came around. I turned her on to Quackwatch. She decided the eat less excercise more diet was cheaper. And she doesn't have to eat brussels sprouts three times a day. Lisa

"Eat less exercise more"?? What a radical concept! I like it, except for the 'exercise' part.

That's funny: I like it, except for the 'eat less' part!
I am afraid I'm not clever enough to come up with a good signature, eh? |
