The House of Representatives approved a strict ban on human cloning yesterday. A quote from the Los Angeles Times reads:

"The penalties make participation in human cloning in any way from creating cloned human cells to patients receiving medicine based on such research done abroad-subject to a felony conviction that could bring a 10-year prison term and, if done for profit, civil penalties of more than $1 million. Critics said the penalties could create a brain drain of scientists departing to work abroad."

This includes the growing of cloned human stem cells in petri dishes folks. This amazingly stupid piece of legislation now goes to the Senate where approval is uncertain. Write your senators!

Don't our politicians have any work to do on existing problems? Oh sure it's great they put a stop to all that evil cloning that's been going on so long but somehow I think there must be something else that needs doing too.

Imagine where the U.S. would be right now if Europe had spearheaded the Internet revolution. Would it be an economic superpower? Would Bush be buying votes with surplus tax dollars? Doubtful.

Of the practical sciences poised for rapid, steady growth in the near term, genetic reasearch and medical biotech are towards (if not at) the top of the list.

Now, we've seen fit to legislate against it here in the state so as to ensure that all the greatest strides in this science are taken elsewhere. In doing so, the U.S. stands to lose its economic pretige in a single fell swoop. I wonder if the GOP will notice the irony when the time comes.

Pointing out as well, those Scientists involved within the biomedical field of Science have a keen sense of Ethics that would have/could have been involved with this Biotech Research. I seriously doubt anyone within it was going to play "Dr. Frankenstein", and create the monster,or resort to unethical practices for personal gains, or power. Imagine what other side benefits may have been gained, such as discovering preventions or cures, [via genetic coding] for irreversible conditions/diseases known today in mankind that still remain unanswered, or barely treatable. That real possiblity alone is worth it!..Could this [law banning it] be a result, in part, of the morality code based on "certain religious beliefs"[aka "Moral Majority"] of those in power to veto its entire concept?..I must truly wonder just how "scientifically based" this decision was to ban Biotech?...My senator needs some communications from me, as well!...
