I did some reading at a site called Bad Science or something like that. I found some interesting links(I didn't save any of them! Whoops) but what I found were comments by scientists commenting on how some of the Global Warming denialists werelisting things that are in scientific circles proven beyond a doubt. yeah I know, this isn't very helpful without the links, but it looks like another game of whose source do you believe.

Could be http://www.ems.psu.edu/~fraser/BadScience.html that you were referring to.

First of all whilst I do consider protecting the environment to be important I don't consider lying to be a good way to protect it, basically your combining a strawman and ad homenin attack into one.

Ok, I've never been in the debate club. What the hell is and ad homerim and what the hell is a strawman? Part of why I am here is to become better at debate.

From "Why People Believe Weird Things", by Michael Shermer..."The goal of an ad hominem attack is to discredit the claimant in hopes that it will discredit the claim." (p.56)
Excellent book. Highly recommended.

Sega,
ad hominem - to the man; an argument that relies on personal attacks rather than reason.
As they say in sports - play the ball, not the man.
strawman = an example/comparison that is easy to knock down/discredit.

I met Shermer last week (the third...guess that's more than a week) at Santa Clara (Jesuit!!!!) University. If you ever get the chance to hear him speak don't miss it. He gave a talk called How We Believe: Pseudoscience and Transcendence in an Age of Science. It was like if Steve Martin decided to teach science and do a little slight of hand at the same time.

Okay, Slater, now I'm jealous. And pouting. I live in South Dakota, so the chances of ever having the opportunity to attend one of his lectures is pretty darned slim. Sometimes I think I'm the only skeptic in the whole blamed state.

When you consider the percent of the population that you, yourself, comprise, it would be about the same as California.
Here in the Bay Area we get to hear some great people. This month I've been to talks by Shermer, Eugenie Scott ( The ED of the National Center for Science Education talking about combating the "New" creationism –on the National day of Prayer), Paul Theroux and Dr Seth Shostak. I was even invited to Seths' party afterwards. You may have seen him on TV, he's the SETI Institute guy. Sharing the Universe is his popular book. He told me that the famous interstella postcard that Carl Sagan had stuck on the side of Voyager -- Ann Druyan had it made at a bowling trophy place on the peninsula.
Best of all Jerry Juhl and Dave Goelz (The Great Gonzo!) are supposed to be here on the 23rd. Can you get here by then?

Arg. Arg, arg, arg. No. Damn.
Once my husband gets back from Oman, we plan to do some traveling. Anything going on in the Sep-Oct timeframe?

Got to see Shermer last sunday. A few jokes, a few magic tricks, and a good talk.

Funniest part was the talk was about creationism. At one point a fly landed on the overhead projector. Wondered if we were about to get a demonstration of fly evolution right there.

Big thing for me is he recognized my name! from a book review I wrote for Skeptic.
