.... every now and then I need to clean out the clutter to make room for more. And like any packrat, I find lots of stuff that I didn't know I had. Most of it's pretty useless and I gathered it all up just because it was new and shiny, but here's one that's worth sharing:
quote: 'Prehistoric man began global warming' Date: December 11 2003
Measurements of ancient air bubbles trapped in Antarctic ice offers evidence that humans have been changing the global climate since thousands of years before the industrial revolution.

Ahhhh, global warming....is it or isn't it happening?
Being an avid surfer, I have a fair bit of interest in weather (and after 20 odd years of surfing I am pretty confident of my weather predictions in my little corner of the world). Climate change and the study of climate is a vastly different kettle of fish though and there is still a fair bit of argument for and against and it seems that the jury is still out.
Personally I believe that our species has had an effect on global climate, particularly since the onset of the industrial revolution. Have our actions reversed any climate change or have we gently assisted any average temperature rises that were happening anyway?
If you look at the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warming period before hand, atmospheric Carbon Dioxide levels remained pretty consistent however there was a marked difference in climate over a thousand years. What caused this? There are many theories ranging from changed in oceanic circulation to changes in solar output as well as others.
There are many parameters that affect climate and greenhouse gas emissions are one of them. It will never be known exactly what effect humans have on climate.
All I know is that we have had a remarkably mild summer with autumn like conditions (deep lows in the Southern Ocean and prevailing westerly winds instead of large highs and hot northerly winds) which is good for surfing, but not so flash for the holiday makers. Last year it was a bloody stinking hot summer with prevailing off-shores and 35 plus temperatures for days on end. Last year the letters section in the paper was full of people complaining about global warming, this year the letters section is full of people scoffing at it.
The weather, no wonder it is such a good conversation starter. |

Yes, Well....I've always hated Man, no matter if he started that or not. But I do like what Gezzam said. And yes, it is not proven that there is such a thing. However, Man is not living WITH nature, he, in most cases, is trying to control it. And I don't like that.
Just yesterday I was watching a program about Polar Bears and a city in Alaska (I think it was, I came in the middle of the program), where they had to air lift the poor bears back to their natural habitat when they come into the city. It's some sort of tourist attraction! That's Man for ya, have to move into every other creatures living space and then when one of them gets in the way, Man acts shocked and has to get rid of the 'problem'. Golal warming or not, Man has changed the face of the Earth and not for the better. |

I personally think that our Sun has more to do with Earth's climate than anything else man can cook up. There have been cold spells and warm spells long before Homo Sapiens came along. I am more concerned with what is happening to the Sun than about anything else. Oh, well, Andromeda is moving toward us (or is it the Milky Way that is moving toward Andromeda?). Oh, well, both galaxies are moving toward each other and that will be a bit of a mess when it happens. However, the Sun will probably become a red giant star before that happens and perhaps will also end up as a white dwarf star (an extremely compact stellar object less than 1.44 Solar masses) around that time. Right now, my neck of the woods is experiencing some cold weather, so the global warming is not helping Michigan out at all! JUST KIDDING! Life is fraught with dangers and one of them can be as horrendous as another. Right now, I wish I could latch onto some global warming in this neck of the woods. Brrrrr...
