Let's see how to put this...

I may have to apply for this in the near future, especially if I can't find a job soon. I'm almost flat broke right now.

I found the number to call to find out how to apply for food stamps. But is there any help for things like housing, utilities, things that food stamps doesn't cover, etc.

I don't know what's available or how to go about applying for any of this, I've never had to or needed to before now. Am hoping this wouldn't be for longer than necessary to get through school, am taking an accelerated MLT course this coming session at the local CC. Hopefully, not even that long, just enough to get me through until I can find a job. Should be able to work at that through my medical degree, but until then I maybe SOL.

Any ideas on this?

In all truth, I don't know. If it was me, I'd make an appointment at the local Social Services office, and I'd do it soon. It probably takes a little time for things to kick in. It takes 6 months for SS disability.

Wishing all luck in getting it going. Your situation is what Social Services was created for. The so-called 'welfare queens' are very rare, but have managed to screw it up for those who truly need it.

Thanks filthy. The problem is, I can't even find a listing for social services in the phone book. There's human services, but nothing that seems to deal with anything other than food stamps. This is where I'm running into a problem, I don't know where to start.

I would think that the food stamp place would at least know where the required office is. Also, you could -- this is a little trite -- ask a cop. Failing that, a phone call to City Hall might get you some answers. If that comes up dry, the state will have some sort of info bureau who's business is to know such things.

I have found that it gets better results if you show up in person, if possible.

Only, it costs me 3.75 to get to the offices in Denver, then the same to get home again.

I know what you mean, going to have to sit on the phone on Monday, after I try to hit a couple places with apps. If the phone doesn't get me anywhere, then I guess I'll spend the money to show up in person.

Can you call your local Crisis Clinic? If you were in Washington State I could link you to their website here. But I bet other areas have similar lines.

Also, social workers are great resources for public help. Is there a free or reduced-cost counseling center in your area? Even the receptionist may be able to refer you somewhere...

If you have kids, you can apply for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) or possibly Aid to Families with Dependent Children. I think it's harder to get help if you don't have kids.

Your electric company might have a program whereby part of your cost is paid from a donation fund. You might want to call them and explain your situation.

Here we have what's called Section 8 housing: housing set-asides for people with lower incomes. Those typically aren't in great areas, but it's better than being on the street. I think Section 8 is a federal program.

That's my brain dump, FWIW. Good luck, Trish.

Did you try Firstgov.gov?

Try this:

No Gorgo, didn't know the website existed. Thanks, will go look through it. I don't know if I should check state, county, or federal resources for this information.

WIC here in CO is good through age 5, my kid is 13. She's also currently living with my idiot brother and his bitchy wife, so she can have medical coverage. See, I was making too much on unemployment when I was first laid off in 2000 to qualify for medical coverage under the state children's health program. If $849/mo before they remove taxes is too much, you really do have to be destitute to qualify. Found that through tri-county health. Knew about them from a friend that didn't have medical coverage - they charge based on income.

The electric company has a program called LEAP, but you do need to be able to pay part of the bill, I have nothing coming in right now, and am living with my mother. But school is a 2 1/2 hour bus ride from here, so need to move much closer to school, but I can't do that without money. Even so, I can't afford to take the bus if I don't have a job. I can't afford the bus pass to find a job. Catch 22. Section 8 housing qualifications require that you have some money coming in, doesn't it? If I were working I wouldn't really need the help, then I could work part time and find a roommate while going to school. That would be the ideal situation.

Can't do much til monday anyway.

My kid is in a really good school district right now and I don't want to move her out of that situation. Plus she does have stability that I can't give her until I have a household and a job. Plus working and going to school through her teen years is a scary proposition, all things considered, my brother being an idiot and is wife a real bitch to me, they are able to provide her with someone at home in the evenings.

Your states Welfare office (aka Office of Public Aid) might get you some help. There is usually a pittance (stipend for housing and other necessarries) available through the same office which issues food stamps. Social Security might help given your medical problems. Also, First Gov, as Gorgo suggests, is an excellent resource.

But, you live in a predominately Republican land of "compassionate conservativism" and bizzness is bad. Aid may be hard to get unless you are completely destitute. The bitch of it is, you have taken steps to ensure that your child is properly cared for. As such, you have acted responsibly. Since you have done that, the government will disqualify you for ADC. (Aid to Dependant Children)

If I were you, I'd check state, county, and federal. Heck, you paid into them while you were working, you might as well collect some of it.

Thanks Val. My medical, if I can get back in after going to SD, should be covered through VA. I'm not worried about medical coverage for me.

Trying to work through DAV to get the scaffoid cyst listed as service related, since the ortho in SD thought that it was definitely the by product of a suspected wrist fracture that happened while I was on active duty. My knees and other joints aren't terribly bad when I'm on the Levothyroxin, which I know I shouldn't go off, but have to get to VA to get reapproved for coverage. But that test wasn't done while I was in the military, even though it was requested several times. The total disabilities probably won't give me any money, but should guarantee my continued medical coverage.

Well, figured her welfare was the more important issue. Seemed like a good idea at the time, the pros still outweigh the cons right now. She's secure. One less worry.

Skip all the bottom people and organizations.

Whenever I have a problem that in some way involves something the government can help with, I call my represenative in the apporprate jurisdiction.
Local, (city councialman), county, state or my congressman. That's what we pay them to do. (I'm on THE List!)
Ask the right questions and insist on answers. They usualy can tell you who or put you through to someone who will help.

There's a web site that lists our represenitives. Don't have it handy, think it might be a link on the whitehouse.gov site. Not hard to find. Good luck. nlm

Thanks Snake. Do need to get this figured out in the very near future. Still haven't found a job - yet.

Further more... When/if you call your elected officals, explain that and everything to them.
Don't know about other states but California has job training programs.
My partner lost his job recently and they practicaly fall over their feet trying to help a person find something to help. So ask if your state has all that too.
Oh, whoops...shouldn't have said that about my state. If anyone is listening....I don't live in California. Don't come here looking for a job. It's awful here, we have no money to give away. OK?
