Attack of the Clones has been on HBO quite a bit lately and I've been thinking of the struggle between the Light and Dark sides of the Force. I have to wonder - what in the galaxy does the Dark side, via the emperor's exploits, really want
Think of it like this - let's say he actually wins. Yes, we know he destroys the Jedi, builds his empire, blows up a planet of nice people in episode 4, etc etc. But I mean what if the Dark side triumphs completely - the rebelion in episode 6 is crushed, the ewoks slaughtered, Luke is converted, the death star 2 completed, etc. What would the Empire set about doing once the rebellion is gone?
Does the Dark side want to destroy all life? The Death Star would be a good means to that end, but it doesn't make sense, since the Force - Dark or Light - comes from living things. Why would it destroy it's own source of energy?
The Jedi were all about law and order so does the dark side want chaos and disorder? But the emperor couldn't maintain his empire in chaos, and why go to all that trouble to create the empire just to let it fall apart? So the Dark side must appreciate law and order as much as the Light.
What about fear & hate? The Dark Side takes its strength from fear and hate - at least that's how good people get converted. The Dark Side, through the emperor, seeks to strengthen itself by making the entire galaxy as afraid and full of hate as possible. So is that it? It makes sense in the context of the Death Star - what would fill you with more terror and make you hate more than to see an entire world destroyed? Let's flesh this concepte out a bit:
The actual struggle in the Star Wars universe is between safety and love on the 'Light' side of the Force and fear and hate on the Dark.
The Jedi seek to make life a safe and loving experience and the Sith seek to make life a fearful and hateful experience. Good, I'm glad I've got that resolved. Any comments out there? Have I missed the boat? Is there something I missed?
In a marginally related bitch, why does Lucas bake in the theme of technology vs. nature??? He's sloppily mixed two concepts that are at least partially contradictory. The characterization of the Dark side to be in line with technology and mechanization and things generally unliving contradicts the source of the Force. Afterall the force takes it's energy, dark or light, from life - so the dark side should be as steeped in living things as the light. Here Lucas is in fundamental conceptual error.
On further consideration, there's a contradiction between the love and hate portion of my conclusion above. Didn't Anikin's love for Senator Amidala undermine his Jedi training and make him more vulnerable to the Dark side? So how can love be a characeristic of the Light side if it is shunned by the Jedi and a useful tool for the Dark side? Is this another error of Lucas' or have I missed something?

The Good Side is about the greater good for all living-kind, cooperation, peace and prosperity, every living being having equal value, the strong helping and protecting the weak. The Dark Side is about personal power, gains and thrills. Selfishness.
Very much like the ideal Communism against American Republicans if you ask me... |
