From an audience member at a screening in NY:

"It wasn't [overly] violent. If you read the Bible, you'll see that he [Gibson] went by that. If the Bible had had pictures, it would have been just like that."

I'm seeing reviews on it, some disgusted and some singing it's praises. It seems to be one of those 'love-it-or-hate-it' things that has no middle ground.

To me, thus far, it sounds like a high-dollar snuff flick with religious overtones, and not really my kind of thing, my atheisism not withstanding. O'course, only having read a few blurbs by people trying to sell newspapers, I might be forming the wrong opinion.

If any of the membership takes it in, how 'bout a review untainted by professional journalism?

I've decided not to see it.

The violence would make me uncomfortable enough. But worse, I can't stand the gothic, dramatic, over-the-top aspects of Christianity which seem to be shown in the movie in spades. And I'd invariably end up sitting next to some glassy-eyed True Believer who'd just get on my nerves.

I think I'm getting cranky in my old age.

I'm sick of hearing about the movie. I might've gone to see it out of curiosity, but not now.

I'll probably go see it (or rent it later.) I am usually a fan of Mel Gibson's stuff.

I have been actively trying to not read or hear anything about it before I go [other than stuff like this thread]. So I really don't know what to expect.

I dunno when I will see it because Broken Lizard's Club Dread comes out Friday. WOO!

I dont know if I wnat to see it... At first, it looked like a daring, artsy film, but now I'm not so sure anymore. I mean, it's a Gibson flick right? You know, the Leathal Weapon guy? :)

There you go . Gibson's good at that over the top thing...

I've found this on Reason Online: Spectacle and Sadism. Interesting read...

ED: And here's another article, this one from the New York Press.

I'm definately not going to see it. I thought "Last Temptation of Christ" sucked. This one looks to not be much better plus it uses subtitles. I'm not going to waste money on this. I won't even rent it. It doesn't appeal to me.

I'll stick with "Jesus Christ Superstar" and other films which focus on the works of Jesus instead of the death of Jesus.

I will not let that influence my decision, since Gibson didn't direct Lethal Weapon. However, he did direct "Braveheart".

A noble decision. I'm not that noble though.

Thank you, Maglev. Interesting links!

I like weird, dark, indy movies. I'm not afraid of art that's twisted or unconventional. But the older I get, the less I want to see violence. "Kill Bill" cured me of the violent movie genre for life, I think.

I slept through most of "The Last Temptation of Christ". I didn't get it at all.

I'm beginning to believe I'm missing the religion gene. For real.

Well, it's right there in the article, so no real need to post the picture here.

Worthy or not, this flick is going to be a huge success.

Here's another review that ishelping to confirm my suspitions that it will be most appreciated by those who get off on the suffering of others.

Pinochet would love it.

I know, it sounds like a Monty Python movie. You're thinking there must be something to The Passion of the Christ besides watching a man tortured to death, right? Actually, no: This is a two-hour-and-six-minute snuff movie—The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre—that thinks it's an act of faith. For Gibson, Jesus is defined not by his teachings in life—by his message of mercy, social justice, and self-abnegation, some of it rooted in the Jewish Torah, much of it defiantly personal—but by the manner of his execution.

Hopefully, it will be a little tempered by the death of a woman (50's) by heart attack during a screening here in Chicago. Maybe the over-the-top critics claiming some sort of devine retribution concerning this movie will pick up on it.

Yes, I've read about that. But, in all fairness, if the stress of a mere movie would would give her a heart attack, she was about due for one, anyway. Nothing was said about her health prior to the movie, that I saw.

Also, from what I've read, various Evangelical, Pentacostal, et al churches pretty much bought out the first showings in order to inspire their congregations. Is this good? To further demonstrate the evil that we can so-readly inflict upon each other?

I don't think so. I think I'll shine this epic on.
