In reference to Dave W. post on CRITICAL THINKING FENCE-SITTING:
quote: we must address -- and seek to "recruit" -- both of the large groups of fence-sitters. They all need to be shown the reasons for accepting a scientific position (or rejecting nonsense), and to be shown why they should accept the reasons themselves. Anything less amounts to a dereliction of our self-imposed "duty" to advance critical thought in the world.
(emphasis added) I am not comfortable with the idea of becomming a skeptical evangelist (SKEvangelist). I never knew that it was my duty to do so. I believe my duty lies in correcting wrong thinking when it is presented to me or when my opinion is asked. I don't like to be "evangelized", so I assume others don't either. [Moved to General Skepticism - Dave W.]

Frankly, I didn't realize that that sentence would come off as evangelistic. And you're quite correct, as far as I'm concerned, with where your "duty" lies. People who don't express their opinions, or who don't ask (explicitly or implicitly) for mine, are of little consequence in the whole "fence-sitting" scenario. It is, instead, those people who have the potential to spread ideas to others in whom we are interested. |
