Ahem!!!
School is not needed? How would one learn to spell, for instance?
I once met a man who was illiterate at 45. He couldn't even read the names of the songs in the Juke box. I had to pick his Hank Williams tune for him. I'm sure he didn't think he needed school either.
And if your screwin around, I personally like to shoot better than I like to dribble.

I can't spell and I went to school! That's why spell check was invented.

That was very kind of you. I too have always depended on the kindness of strangers. I don't like watches and try not to wear one, I also don't carry pens. There's always someone around who has one. One can always get what he wants if he tries.

If your education was just about facts then I think you missed something. I did not go to school to learn how to spell or to learn any unnecessary facts, I would never need to know again, but to learn how to learn.

And you think one learns THAT in school? If you are lucky enough to get a good teacher and judging by California standards, it would be easier to win the lottery, then maybe you can get more out of school then how to pass a test but there are many ways to learn how to learn other then formal schooling. That's why I quite high school, it was boring and dull. I knew BEFORE I started school what I wanted to 'learn' but wasn't getting the info in SCHOOL. DOWN with the LAUSD! Grammar school, Jr. high school and high school are a waste of time.

Hey! Don't get me into this. I may be a terrible speller but I at least I know that there are some things you just can't get from watching television...

Thanks Friend Kil. Now I know who to call when I need help.
Of course there are things one can't learn on TV. No one said everything can be learned from it. I used to target shoot, play baseball and football, cowboys and indians, cops and robbers too.

Unfortunately, Lars, my formal education did little more than teach me facts.
My parents supported my desire to learn any subject by buying me books related to whatever I happened to find interesting at the time (believe me, I jumped from interest to interest, usually science-related, though) and they were the ones who taught me how to learn.
A professor I worked with last year is from Germany, and after several discussions with him I firmly believe you have the better educational system.
A little tangential to the topic: one of the most intelligent, informed, and logical people I know is a terrible speller who never finished college.

Right or wrong, it's unfortunate that this person may not reach as many people as they could and maybe teach them something because they don't bother to learn how to spell properly. But then again, I don't know what you mean by 'terrible' . Misspelling a word here or there is one thing, but stubbornly refusing to correct yourself, or bothering to check your work before submitting a final copy because you think spelling shouldn't affect how intelligent people think you are is a 'bad thing' in my opinion. I wish people took it more seriously.

Only if you don't belive in the separation of Church and State. We have law in our 'constitution' that mandates the teaching of religion at school.
Regarding that Orthography stuff I have always been the worst speller in any group I was in. Electronic spell-checkers further deteriorated my abilities. After they reformed the spelling of the German language, I just gave trying to get it right. Thankfully people cut me some slack when posting in english.
In my opinion as long as you communicate in such a rather informal forum as this, were you can expect people to pay more attention to your point than to your style, little mistakes are pardonable. Human communication is so wonderfully redundant, that with a little to no work one can reconstruct the meaning, even if it has been horrible mutilated.

Tim, I think I know who you mean. Or do you mean who I think you do? If so I agree with you. And there are intelligent people who are even illiterate. One has not to do with the other. BTW, once many years ago I was having a conversation with a teacher and I mentioned I couldn't spell. I was surprized to hear him say, ''It's not that important, that's why we have secretaries''. So that's why now I say, that's why we have spellcheck, heh he. 'If it looks right, print it!' |

That's true. Most of the people I know English was not their native language and they all have various degrees of command of English. Many times I have to go over in my mind to figure out what they are trying to say. It all gets strightened out eventually.

It might be cool to leave this poll a bit longer. Notice the surge by the proponents of Philosphy....it could be a tight race!

Ok, cool with me too. But can you have more then one poll at the same time. Just asking! I probably would have voted for Philosophy as a 2nd choice since it's the only subject in which I got good grades. And also it's got everything in it, history, math, art, science, great literature, psychology, etc. N.
