Methinks the Luddites just might have a point......

Sorry to have been gone so long. What happened, my idiot computer developed a cyber version of the Bloody Flux, the healing of which was far beyond my capacity nor indeed, understanding. So, I hauled the pitiful thing off to the computer geek; the same one who'd sold it to me a decade or so ago and has kept me in mouses (mice?), new keyboards, and the odd bit of software. He told me that the box is now so old and shabby, it's not worth fixing, if indeed it could be done. Gotta have a new one, he sez. I'm on a fixed income, I replies, can't afford a new one.

He said that as all I really needed was the box, he'd put something together with bits and pieces laying around the shop that I could afford. The price he quoted was acceptable.

And so, there was contented anticipation in La Casa Filth until my much older and far shabbier motorcycle broke a valve. Fortunately, as it's a sidevalve engine, the damage wasn't too bad; but it was enough that I had to choose between riding and surfing. The choice was, of course, obvious. I explained this to my geek friend, who also rides and understood perfectly, and he said he'd build me the box anyway and I could pay him when I had the bread.

The problem with that deal is that he only worked on it when he felt like it, and I got the new(?) computer only the other day. I'll pay him off at the end of the month.

It's a much better machine than the old one.

Now I've been facing the tedium of finding all of the links and references I've built up over the years. I swear, it's almost like listening to a Dubya speech -- frustrating. The worst of it is that I've lost a couple of manuscripts that, like an idiot, I had no floppy backups for. A mistake I'll not make again. I face a lot of re-research and rewrite on those.

Well, where was I when Cyber-Armageddon came to pass? Something to do with ice cores and CO-2, as I recall. I was looking for the paper I'd originally read when the old computer snapped it‘s lunch. In spite of a vast amount of googling and dogpiling, I've been unable to find it. This makes me speculate that it's been taken down due to being in error -- it had to do with pollen found in the core's layers. Which means that I too, am in error. Ah well. If that's so, it's not the first time and I doubt it'll be the last.

I did read something interesting about varves being used for calibration, that I didn‘t know about.

So, the bad penny has turned up again, a bit bent, a little more tarnished, and stone broke ‘till the end of the month and probably beyond. But back never the less.

Good to see you're back online, filthy. I was worried you'd been seriously envenomated or something equally as awful. Mom taught me how to worry, really well.

So, the bad penny may have returned, but at least it's heads-up.

Thanks, guys. Sorry for answering so late -- I kinda lost track of this thread.
