Ricky, you have tremendous patience and a sharp mind.
I wonder if the bigot internalized that her/his position was morally and logically indefensible. I mean...what does it take for bigots to *get it?*

That person says she is 16? Well... that is a big part of the problem right there.... you can't talk to 16 y/o's and expect anything other than the sensation you'd get while beating your head against a brick wall repeatedly. |

Her argument that people adopted by gay couples or children of an interracial relationship are being made fun of is particularily interesting, especially since it's most likely people like her that are making fun of them... |

Ricky, if you haven't noticed.... you're an exception to the rule. Most teenagers already know everything and are incapable of actually applying critical thought to any topic on which they are experts(which is all topics). When confronted with their inconsistencies, like your chat friend, they just get pissed off and tell you you're an idiot.
It's pretty much pointless to speak to them after that point. |

Very true. It takes time to discover that you might sometimes be wrong. Even more disstressing is that some people never learn. |

Not all 16 Y/Os are like that! I hope I'm not. I agree, many are, but isn't generalising against a group of people like that Ad Hom I hear you talk about so much? |

Nope. Rash generalization, maybe, but not ad hom.

When I was 16 I was very knowledgable. In fact I was amazed at how little my father actually understood about the world compared to me. The truly amazing thing is that by the time I reached 19 or 20 his intelligence must have jumped 30 or 40 IQ points!
(My appologies to Mark Twain.)

It's a characteristic that is expresses by most teens, not all.
It'd only be a rash generalization if I has said all teens. |

This is probably a Straw Man, but is it such when you say that for a 10 year old? What about 14? 15? Where is the line?
Everyone matures at different rates. I've seen some 13 year olds express more maturity than 30 year olds. I would say from my experience, that those individuals who are mature for 16 are not representative of the whole. As a population, 16 year olds tend to be immature and feel that they know better than more experienced people. ("tend" in this case acknowledges the mature, critical thinkers who are 16.) |
