Well I really, really like my automatic ice maker....really.

You're close to one that occurred to me today:

Mechanical refrigeration.

Think what life would be like without a refrigerator. Warm beer! Ugh!

And air conditioning. Modern buildings / skyscrapers would be impossible wothout it.

I think I'm gonig to have to go with R. Wreck on this one. I would rather have a cold beer than a book any day

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Hi Funkshuntheta, and welcome!

If we look to the alchmests, we find the distillery, so important in chemestry as well as whiskey.

To get started, I'll toss one out:

The Insikerator(tm) garbage disposal.

I like to cook, and that means there are scraps, peelings etc to dispose of, and with two kids, there's usually uneaten stuff left on the plates after every meal. A little water, flip a switch, and whoosh, its gone, off to feed the microbes at the local treatment plant. And you don't have a biology experiment in the trash can. Truly a work of inspired genius.

Sewers.
