In a recent discussion (see Topic 3185), a paragraph from my site "Self- esteem and Intelligence" (http://self-improvement.mindfocus.net) was quoted. The subject was the studies, made on twins reared apart, in order to determine the influence of heredity on intelligence.
This elicited a response saying that in absence of a reference, the number of twins involved in the studies could not be known and so the importance of the studies could not be ascertained.
The purpose of this posting is to supply the references necessary to anyone interested in learning more about the subject. Studies of twins reared apart at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere can be found in:
Plomin, R. (1997). Genetics and intelligence. In N. Colangelo & G. Davis (Eds.), Handbook of gifted education (2nd ed.; pp. 67-74). Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

For general discussions of behavior genetic methods, see: Plomin. R., DeFries. J.C.. & McClearn (1990). Behavioral genetics: A primer (2nd ed.). New York: Freeman.
I would also like to make clear that the purpose of my site is not to be a scientific publication, although every care is taken to assure the accuracy of what is published. The site's purpose is to bring introductory information to a person browsing the Web. However, there exists in the site a book section where that person can find the resources to continue searching in depth.
Considering that the topic was on Eugenics, I think it is opportune to remember that the creator of Eugenics and the initiator of twin studies was the 19th century scientist Sir Francis Galton, who was a cousin of the other great Victorian-age genius, Charles Darwin. Galton has a Web site dedicated to him:
http://www.mugu.com/galton/
In that site, the following quotation can be found:
"Both the idea of a general factor of cognitive ability ... and the idea that genetic factors might be an important source of variance in cognitive ability have been continuously debated since they were first systematically expounded by Galton ... . Reviews of Galton's books published in the London Times at the time of their appearance could, if slight changes were made, be published today." -- Thomas Bouchard 'IQ similarity in twins reared apart: findings and responses to critics' 1997.

Yes, thank you for the additional info Hector. |
I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.
