Because 'banning gay marriage' is not the same as 'protecting marriage'.

An interesting point- I'd like to know how marraige has still preserved any sort of sanctity. Because, I mean, the Las Vegas Elvis Marriage Parlors, the fact that over 50% of marriage ends in divorce--So what about protecting marriage?

quote:

Because I can turn off nudity and violence on tv if I want (not that that is relevant since I never watch tv anyway).

Human nature to be violent and chaotic. If we don't kill something, sometime, then we tend to lose a very important part of our very being animal. We used to be carnivorous apes, and not much has changed. Too bad that we have to redirect our aggression towards simulated violence on the cinematic screen, television, music, and other forms of media.

quote:

Because human cloning is already being stopped by non-christians and this is not a pure christian issue (same for the tv issue btw).

This, I think, is not a bad thing. Why would we want to add more population to the earth when our current population is already bursting at the seams?

quote:

Because the christian right is trying to hinder important research after AIDS, other sexual transmittable diseases and homosexuality.

This might be an irrelevant point, but I might have to side with Christians on this one. There are WAY too many people populating this planet, I wouldn't mind a few million being released of medical supervision. But on the other hand, those humans still need to exist to provide for other humans that could possibly bring this human age into great progression. Unfortunately, such is an issue that cannot be resolved with current technologies known to our human species.

quote:

Because the christian right is trying to establish a theocracy in stead of a democracy

I completely agree with your points, but to sidetrack, when exactly has a large group of people used an impressive amount of rational reasoning to conclude the best methods to lead our human race? Naturally, the masses are left to make the decisions, but the intellect of our current race seems to be little more than disheartening.

quote:

Get my drift? I could go on but then I will actually have to start thinking to come up with examples, in stead of just listing them.

Just thought I would add a bit to your current post. The reason why we are actually posting here in this particular forum is being we share opinions, and I think the widespread opinion shared by this community is not one commonly shared by the Christian community.

TV without 'filth' and 'nudity'? Well, in my view, nudity is not filthy. It is your body. We all have one. It might be nice to keep the violence on TV down a bit, but I have no issues if heaven forbid my son sees a breast. Women go topless on European beaches and last I checked there weren't rampant perverts attacking women at random. In fact, it seems the Catholic Priesthood was more conducive to pedophiles than TV watchers in particular.

I especially agree on this one. What's up with nudity that makes it so filthy?

While this verse firstly address personal hypocrisy, I feel that you can, indeed should, also apply it to the 'body of Christ' as well.

The image of Christianity you are projecting is important. Your actions witness of your faith. People in your surrounding judges Christianity by your actions.

There are indeed many hypocrites in the Christian faith, and as your brother's keeper, you need to consider 'the plank' in the eye of the body of Christ: The church and its members.

As long as there are judgemental Christian asses out there, people are going to find Christianity a turn-off.

Joed., thanks for a reasonable reply instead of a rant. Mine was kind of a rant.

Yes, there are lots of good people who are religious and lots of good people who are not religious, and vice versa. So I take back anything I said that implied ALL Christians were the same. (I do think the religion itself is full of hypocrisy so I don't take that statement back totally.)

But let's look at a few things. Why does a gay couple marrying hurt a Christian who isn't involved? Why do the Christians feel the need to pass laws that tell other people they must follow supposed Christian rules?

The attempts to change abortion law will be a disaster if they succeed. We know because it was against the law in the past. There are better ways to decrease abortions. Outlawing them will not stop them so it is not a superior way of decreasing them. Why not just have your own unwanted babies and let God punish women who have abortions?

Teach all the abstinence you want, but the schools have to teach all kids from all faiths and all walks of life. Why should any religious believer think they have the right to control what is taught to kids in school about sex? All the schools my son has been in give individual parents the right to opt their kids out. In fact, the middle school program here was an opt in program instead.

And, the notion it is OK to restrict where the government can spend all of our tax dollars is also taking undue authority over my tax dollar. Spend and restrict yours all you want, but I should be able to support birth control including abortions for poor women with my tax dollars. And, I should be able to support HIV prevention that includes condoms.

I definitely get annoyed just thinking about all the crap being dished out by the 51%. Wanting to stack the courts with fundamentalist judges is certainly not necessary to live a good Christian life. Why is it necessary to tell everyone else they must follow Christian crap? How does it impact you?

So, is the goal to control the sinning society so Christians and their kids won't be tempted or something? Wanting to be active in government is one thing, but where does this mandate to dictate or legislate moral behavior come from?

I guess that is the big problem here. Christians think it is their Godly mandate to push their crap on everyone else. Certain Islamists do the same. How would you like to be a Christian in a Muslim country? In some countries it is illegal to spread Christian religion. Didn't they outlaw Scientology in Germany recently? So who is right?

All I ask is the Christians get out of the business of trying to control the laws of this country. We are a secular county. If it doesn't stay that way, I can guarantee you there will be grief for all.

It makes me angry just thinking about this stuff.

Please leave Scientology out of this discussion. It's not a religion, but a tool to control people for world domination. Just because Scientology claimed to be religion in order to dodge tax in the US, doesn't mean it actually is one.

Damn, Filthy... You got me there.

I was actally thinking that as I wrote that post, but I figured that if I don't say anything, it would be interesting to see who'd pick it up.
Kudos to you, Filthy.

Edited again to add:

Scientology's goals are more transparent than other religions, I guess that's why the German government did the right thing and banned Scientology.

The difference is question of metaphysics. If there is a Divine Law, a God, then you could delve into the faith to see if it matches. This probably would be base on revelations of Divine Law. Then you say that this is a cult and that is a Faith.

However, if God and Divine Law doesn't exist, than it is a question of control. All religions, cults, philosophies become nothing more than a device a society or person uses to dominate and indoctrinate others. Why do they do this? To increase their numbers and justify the superiority of the "faith or philosophy". There is no true faith, or philosophy in that case. Only the one that has the most followers dictates what is correct. Because, well, they got the numbers and the power to enforce their will.
