Here is a quote from something I posted at http://www.delphi.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=skepticsociety&msg=699.1
quote: It will not be possible to rid the believer of his credulity. If finally convinced that his current belief is nonsense, he will but find another - for it is not the content of his belief which holds him, rather it is the strength of his attachment. In this vein, all religions and other doctrinal belief systems are actually interchangeable. They find their converts among existing believers, and the proselytizers of competing sytems fear and hate the indifferent cynic more than they do each other.
Notice the language the creationist uses when condemning the theory of evolution. He thinks of it as a competing belief system, and doesn't truly understand the nature of scientific theory, hypthosis, proof or provability, testability.... because he never uses it, he doesn't want to, he dare not.
The true believer is possessed of a frail mind, his attachment to his belief is that of the drowning man holding on to whatever stick keeps him afloat.
You cannot simply remove his belief without replacing it with another. As I said, he does not know the difference between true belief and knowledge. When we argue with him in the creationism/evolution debate, we are fighting with an unarmed and perhaps even diseased mind. Examine his arguments closely, you come to realize that he is not arguing for what is believed, rather he is arguing his believing in it.
"The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not."
