The common and accepted idea floating around is that if the US pulls out of Iraq, things will get worse. Question is, for who? Will it get worse for America? Will it be worse for American troops? Will it be worse for Iraqis? Also, it is thought that the world will look down on us if we leave in the middle of all this contention. But, what if we are the cause of all the contention? Will it get better or worse? If we want a democracy there, if we pull out, will they continue to go for that or for something else? If they achieve a democracy, will it have all freedoms? Or will some be limited? Any thoughts?

Both USA and Iraq

The world, as far as I know, already look down on you (well, on America and it's government, not skeptics) for the invasion in the first place.

There are several points of contention, please indicate which you are referring to.

I believe it will get worse.

I do not think there will be democracy in the region for quite a while. Too much money have already been stolen from them by the oil-companies and Hussein, leaving the country in a mess where religious fundamentalism has fertile soil.
USA should learn from history: Israel's constant interference in Palestinian's attempt to create a nation with a separate economic and social infrastructure has left Palestinians without any kind of social security. This is were the Hamas stepped in: They started their own underground social security network, food for starving, rudimentary health care for the sick, and schools for education of children. This have built trust in the Palestinian people, that Hamas can help them. Is it so surprising that Hamas have no problem getting volunteers for their military branch?
Similarly, if the US military can't get basic infrastructure up and running fast as hell, (I'm talking about fresh water and sanitation, electricity, communications, hospitals, police and other domestically run security, etc.) the US is going to face the same problems as Israel. |
