Poll Question:
Guided by my own intuition I used to believe that time is something that has always existed. It existed for an eternity before the big bang and will extend. Now time is no more than just another dimension that emerged along with the others at the big bang. My views change on this subject from time to time. At one time I liked the idea of John Wheelers time reversal universe which he formulated back in the 1960s. I am still a little unsure whether time will eventually end it the vast vacuum of an eternally expanding universe. Now sujective time has muddied the waters even more. What are your views on Time before the Big Bang" ?

I had to edit the title of this poll because it was causing errors. I haven't had a chance to look into this problem yet but will soon. Till then I will edit topic titles when I notice or someone alerts me.

i don't think i understand the question, or perhaps i don't like any of the answers. is it possible, given the current state of knowlege to say anything meaningful about the pre-big bang era? in my opinion something existed before the big bang, but it was not the universe as we know it now.

I recall following a link on the Bad Astronomy board that had some interesting ideas thrown out that were well thought out but it was stressed that it was more or less nothing but an educated guess.
Does anyone remember that link?
I think this poll is perhaps missing the one thing we know: The universe is here right now. I can vote for that one!

My apologies It is a mystery why the those poll questions were cut short but here they are posted in full
[*]The universe was created "in" time and time existed for an eternity before it was created. [*]The universe emerged "with" time and not "in" time, as time is an inbuilt property of it [*]Same as #2 but time will also reverse in accordance to John Wheeler's model. [*]Time is really just an illusion that is manifested during consciousness.[/b]

Your right it may be a good idea to ignore this thread for the time being and I will try again a little later.

Or what about theories such as the collapse of a previous universe or the colission of two universes (requires parallel "dimensions")? Time and space simply 'restarted'.

Using "'s(quotes) in titles will result in everything after the first quote being cut off.
Sorry about this. I haven't been tracking as many bugs down recently but I will get to this and a few others soon.

Before the Big Bang cannot be measured. It cannot be reasonably be discussed. Therefore, I cannot answer the questionnaire, because it did not include the inability to be measured and therefore outside of science.

Mmmm..., think me would try door number 2. Did me win!?!
"I am still a little unsure whether time will eventually end it the vast vacuum of an eternally expanding universe."
Don't understand this statement. Why would time "eventually end" in an "eternally expanding universe"
"Now sujective time has muddied the waters even more."
What is this, "sujective time," some kind of psychological effect

Right now, the space between the huge galactic groups in the universe is being measured as ACCELERATING in its EXPANSION. Astrophysicists/cosmologists have been using Type Ia Supernovae as standard candles. Originally, they were attempting to find out how fast the universe was slowing down, but voilą! The universe was doing just the opposite. It is now pretty well accepted by a large portion of the astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists. It is very exciting to have such an idea as the collapse of the universe overturned by observation. In January of 1998, it was first published in Nature and became the *Discovery of the Year* in the 18 December 1998 issue of Science.

@tomic:
I use asterisks (*) instead of quotation marks because quotation marks are used in HTML for other purposes. Websites are done in HTML, and quotation marks might be confusing for that reason for the HTML. It is just a guess by me. I am most likely wrong, wrong, wrong. Whatever...

Actually, I will leave the idea of *time* to astrophysicists and cosmologists who have the tools with which to study *time*.
Wheeler wrote a great book (with Taylor) called *Spacetime Physics* which is important -- a *must* -- for anybody who wants to understand spacetime adequately.

What I find amusing is that this acceleration--if viewed intuitively--would imply that not only was the universe being pushed (a la Big Bang) but it would also seemed to be pulled And, if that were the case it would lead us right back to the "meta" physics of the Greek "Atom-ists" of the fourth century BCE. Cool. Goodbye Hawkings; welcome back Epicurus.
Ya know Epicurus is actually worth a look see (web scearch)to find out about his philosophy. Epicurinism, actually was a much closer match to the neo-skepticism that most of us practice than was that of the classical skeptics. Today an Epicure is only concerned with fine food and drink even though Epicurus himself advised against them. Back in the 4th Century BCE it was a whole mix of morals and observational science that became a "religion without gods" that lasted 700 years.

Just as you cannot travel to a place on the Earth that is north of the north pole, there is no time before the big bang. Time started when space began. That is why it is called "space-time"

Being brand new to these forums, I hope my questions/thoughts will not rehash too much of what has gone on before.
How would Time be computed without a sun? |
