I never entirely trust the first reports I read on this sort of thing; especally those I never heard of. They often tend torward hysterics. We'll know more in a day or two.

But this looks to fit the known facts. As I wrote in an earlier post, the message was indeed sent, then seemed to disappear. Not arriving is less likely than it being ignored.

We'll see.

Well the toll is 60 thousand and expected to climb, ATM. Has anyone heard if Arthur C. Clark made it, or not..? Think he squats over there, somewheres.

I contacted a site for Sir Arthur C. Clarke last night (my first time near my computer in several days) by typing in his name on Google (which brought a message from him, thanking everyone for their concern for him). He was very much alive then. I know of him from all of his wonderful books, etc. I was very nervous about him because he lived on Sri Lanka (where the greatest number of mortalities occurred). However, he thanked everybody who attempted to find out about him. As of then, he was very much alive.

Wonderful! I hope he remains in good health (because Sri Lanka, having the largest number of fatalities, probably is full of bodies which need to be buried FAST).

It worked when I posted it. Go figure... Anyhow just google for the info. It's all over the place...

Just to clarify, Sumatra appears to have the highest bodycount at the moment, not Sri Lanka.

CNN now reporting 116K dead, most on Sumatra (Aceh Province may have lost 25% of its population, some towns missing 80% of their buildings). And over 1,500,000 "displaced" in Sri Lanka.

Oh, and Pfizer, whose arthritis drug Celebrex was in the news recently (and not in a good way), has announced that it's going to be donating $10 million in cash and $25 million in medical supplies for the disaster areas, essentially matching the U.S. commitment so far. Sure, they may be the largest drug company in the world, but they don't have the multi-trillion-dollar budget of the United States, and stockholders tend to be less forgiving than voters (apparently).

Thanks to the SFN powers-that-be for the posting a link for donations on the Home page. I am proud to be an agnostic SFN member, Amazon.com customer, and former Red Cross volunteer today.

For those of you who haven't donated yet, the default is set at $10 but you can give whatever you can afford.

I was waiting on this :
quote:
Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, co-author of "The Field Guide To Lake Monsters And Sea Serpents" (Tarcher/ Penguin), predicts that relief workers will soon be finding a large number of "globsters" on area beaches.

"Globsters" is the term given to big masses of round flesh that measure between eight and 20 feet. Although the globs look like octopi, Coleman says they are often previously-undiscovered species of sea serpents, dolphins or whales.

Would anyone like to lay down some odds on 'sea serpents' other than known snakes washing ashore?

Edited: I am pleased to see that Amazon has raised well over four mil in a very short time. I kicked in a little bit on top of my donation to the church fund. T'wasn't much, but every dime will help.

I'd just like to point out that the donations link was entirely @tomic's doing.

I'm very sorry to hear it. I hope your friend will recover from this loss. That's gotta be hard.
