116k..... not a number that is easy to correlate in ones mind when the context is dead people from a single cause.
I fear that the number will be much higher. And the secondary deaths from disease will be frightening.
Money and supplies and expert people on the ground are the things that will make a difference in the next 6 weeks.

I feel for you...
Sweden had lots of tourists "down there". At least a thousand is not expected to have survived. Our government is being criticized for not doing enough, and being very poorly organized. At least some are doing the right thing: Volvo and Ericsson are refitting their company jet for ambulance duty and sent down there to bring home emergency cases. That makes me proud to be an Ericsson employee... |

She was swedish, the girl that died with all her children. Makes me proud, Ericsson and Volvo, though. It's good to see they're doing something. |

ICR's take on the quake: quote: We grieve the hardship and loss suffered by so many, and pray not only for physical relief, but for increased openness to the Gospel. Our spirits “groan” (Romans 8:23) for deliverance from sin and its ruinous penalty (Romans 8:20-23) on all of a once “very good” creation. We await with anticipation the time when all such catastrophes will be eliminated, and the earth made new again. Then “there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain” (Revelation 21:4). Come quickly Lord Jesus.

I already knew this. quote: Christian right's compassion deficit More than 100,000 dead in south Asia, but it's business as usual at the web sites of America's Christian right organizations
It took President Bush three days to ready himself to go before the television cameras and make a public statement about Sunday's devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck southern Asia. Even though he was late, and much more money will be needed, the president pledged at least $35 million in aid to the victims of the disaster. But, as of December 30, some of the president's major family-values constituents have yet to be heard from: It's business as usual at the web sites of the American Family Association, the Family Research Council, the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family, Concerned Women for America, and the Coral Ridge Ministries.
These powerful and well-funded political Christian fundamentalist organizations appear to be suffering from a compassion deficit. Organizations which are amazingly quick to organize to fight against same-sex marriage, a woman's right to choose, and embryonic stem cell research are missing in action when it comes to responding to the disaster in southern Asia. None of their web sites are actively soliciting aid for the victims of the earthquake/tsunami.
These are not Christians. These are no more than a parcel of fucking low-lifes, fat with the bounty of their deluded followers, who consider only their private goals of more power and wealth.
Those of us who volentarly got off a few dollars for the disaster victims have by far the higher, moral ground.
I suspect that racism and religious intolerence play a large parts in it. If the victims were caucasion and Christian, what then? Probably little more than what they're doing now -- it would take away funds earmarked for other ambitions -- but perhaps they'd at least issue a statment, of sorts.
Assholes!

Oh, and Pfizer, whose arthritis drug Celebrex was in the news recently (and not in a good way), has announced that it's going to be donating $10 million in cash and $25 million in medical supplies for the disaster areas, essentially matching the U.S. commitment so far. Sure, they may be the largest drug company in the world, but they don't have the multi-trillion-dollar budget of the United States, and stockholders tend to be less forgiving than voters (apparently).
The Swedish Prime Minister was just on a TV press conference and announced the government is committing 50 million Euro for disaster relief.
Edit: With current exchange-rates that would be something like US$~75 millions. |

Filthy,
I wouldn't be braying about a lack of compassion. If you are saying that those sites are indicative of lack of compassion and are for assholes becuase there is no link for aid. How bout these: www.glaad.org does not have any posts for tsunami relief. http://www.americanhumanist.org/index.html no link http://www.atheists.org/ no link http://www.skeptic.com/ no link http://www.skepticnews.com/ http://www.csicop.org/ http://www.aclu.org/ http://www.au.org/site/PageServer
Are they also "Assholes" & "racists" or could it be possible that their webmasters are just slow. :|
It's great that this site has a link for relief!!!
You misunderstand me. Over all, at the gressroots level, the response has been all but overwhelming, links or no links. But the major Christian/politico organizations such as those run by Robertson and Falwell, et al, have not only not contributed, but at last report, have not even mentioned it. One would think that they especally would be showing a generous charity.
It is they that I am refering to, and they remain assholes, and I'll continue to bray about it.

Indeed!
It is my hope that they will come around and help. After all, they have a large following and it has been said that this is a disaster of biblical proportions.
Perhaps they will only pay it a token, but even that might bring a family some fresh water and perhaps a little rice.
But will they? At this writing, I have yet to see anything.
Didn't know about Family.org. Good for them!

The company I work for has pledged to match employee donations for disaster relief, supposedly precipitated by an employee suggestion.
If you work for someone it couldn't hurt to ask if the company could do something similar. |
