I watched this documentary on the discovery channel last night. It was about the moon landing being a hoax. Now while I have heard this before like the conspiracy that the holucaust did not happenI do not agree. Although they were talking about how the gloves of the astraunat would not look as it did in the pictures taken by them. They tried to replicate the walk but could not. They also talked of how the flag was flying. Any thoughts?
Remember boys be easy on me I am new here so if you have discussed this befor remember it was not with me.

Yeah, we've been all through this one, a couple of times, if memory serves. I don't have time at the moment -- working on something else and just taking a break -- to get into it again, but will later, if someone else hasn't already done so.

A perfect example of treating TV programs, even science ones, with great skepticism.

If I recall, snopes had an article on that, or maybe it was another source that did a document on it, perhaps I can dig up.

This is on one that Fox TV did, but it will answer most questions.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

No, it wasn't a hoax. [points to Ricky's link]
If you've any questions after reading that, Storm, feel free to ask.

Here's a couple of sites:

First, our good friend, the Bad astronmer, has some remarks.

Fox TV and the Apollo Moon Hoax
(February 13, 2001)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Thursday, February 15th 2001 (and replayed on March 19), the Fox TV network aired a program called ``Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?'', hosted by X-Files actor Mitch Pileggi. The program was an hour long, and featured interviews with a series of people who believe that NASA faked the Apollo Moon landings in the 1960s and 1970s. The biggest voice in this is Bill Kaysing, who claims to have all sorts of hoax evidence, including pictures taken by the astronauts, engineering details, discussions of physics and even some testimony by astronauts themselves. The program's conclusion was that the whole thing was faked in the Nevada desert (in Area 51, of course!). According to them, NASA did not have the technical capability of going to the Moon, but pressure due to the Cold War with the Soviet Union forced them to fake it.

Sound ridiculous? Of course it does! It is. So let me get this straight right from the start: this program is an hour long piece of junk.

But is Phil correct? check it out!

The moon hoax is exactly that, but the landing was real enough. The hoax was the one put forth by people with too much time to smoke weird shit.

Coincidently, I was married on that dreadful day of the first moon landing.

I first heard of the hoax idea only a few years ago. Of course, I had to see what I could find. I've had this site bookmarked ever since.

Here's a site that examines Moon Hoax claims in more detail than Bad Astronomy:

Moon Base Clavius

If you're wondering about disappearing fiducials, or non-parallel shadows, or the radiation hazards of space, or the stability of rockets or Apollo computer technology, you'll find it treated knowledgably at Clavius.

The author both thoroughly understands his subject and has a real knack for explaining it for non-technical readers without condescension or handwaving.
