Might as well start here

I guess this guy skipped the part where the Bible says that God is love, and the part about forgiveness, and the part about casting the first stone, and the "judge not" thing, and... you get my point.

I was set back by the angry attitude towards God at first, but if this is what you folks have been dealing with I can't really blame you.

Unfortunately, it is normally the most insane Christians which have the loudest voices.

Welcome to the SFN, David Mc

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Welcome, David.

What you see isn't an angry attitude towards God, but toward the followers who paint their God as the only way and condemn all of us to hell. (God isn't doing this, the followers are.) It would be illogical for atheists to be angry towards a concept of a supreme being which they lack a belief in. I am theistic and I have gotten quite tired of individuals on this board who attack others here based on the type of God (or lack thereof) that they follow. verlch is one of the outlandish ones. I also will occasionally get miffed at portrayals of my religion which are inaccurate.

For the most part, folks here are live and let live. But if you bring an arguement which is unsupported, be prepared to be challenged on it.

Again, welcome. I look forward to finding out more about your views.

Welcome David Mc.

All here are not atheists, although it might seem as though we are.

But even our believer friends object to the likes of Phelps, et al.

We discuss many, indeed most any topic from a skeptical viewpoint, and we don't always agree, even among ourselves. I hope you enjoy it here.

Thank you all.

I was directed here from the Bad Astronomer forums and fairly advised that crap would not fly far on this board. The controlled outrage is actually comforting.

Thanks again for the welcome.

This is probably as tough a forum as you're likely to find.

We all are perfectly willing to research and sometimes pick the nit until it bleeds. I think that this costs us in participating numbers, but on the other hand, we get some highly informative discussions.

Bullshit doesn't fare very well, here.

I lurk at Phil's site as well as at Randi's, but SFN is home.

I'm not angry towards any gods. I am one of those atheists. I actually love cultural diversity including peoples religious expressions. But for those who consider others who don't echo the believer's beliefs are 'bad' 'amoral' and so on, well that's a different story.

But as to the God is love stuff, I'll be the first to say I can find an overwhelming amount of God isn't love in the Bible and very little that says God is love. I have concluded after reading most of the Bible, skipped some 'begats', that what most Christians say is in the Bible isn't in there. Instead those trying to support the love theme merely find a quote here and there and act as if it is consistently written throughout the Book. Or quotes from the Old Testament are supposedly over ridden by New Testament quotes. That would be fine, but the New Testament isn't full of 'God is love' either.
