Verlich at some point in his rants, he had said that you don't see stars being formed or dying. Well this is not exactly a star dying but this photo does show the formation of a new nebula as a result of the throes of a nearby white dwarf.

I thought this was quite cool.

Ahh, but you weren't there to see it die, were you?

God probably just created the nebula.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky...what ever are we to do with you.

I've heard that very response as I'm sure you have. Also the one where the light from whatever cosmic event was created in transit.
Then I'll ask what purpose that serves. Just to fool us? Keep us guessing? One of those things we are not supposed to fathom or question, I guess.

Actually, many supernovae have been seen in other galaxies but rarely in our own. Regardless, the statement that we don't see stars dying is certainly false.

Actually, Way this was not a supernova. The star involve was a white dwarf and it blew off some of it's outer layers in a nova explosion. This is MUCH less intergetic than a supernova. The interesting part is that increased radiation from the white dwarf 'turned on' the red emission nebula. I do not believe that has been seen before.

If I knew then what I know now then I would know more now than I know.

Right. I have that Astronomy Picture of the Day as my home page. I had seen and read the same. I was simply adding data to your comment about the verlch rants you mentioned. specifically that we don't see stars being formed or dying. We have seen stars dying.

Agreed. Supernova 1987A is one of the best examples of this rather spectacular death.

Supernovae are not so rare in the Milky Way. On average they occur every 100 years in most galaxies of the same age, including ours. It's just that average doesn't mean every time and the last one in our galaxy was about 400 years ago.

Star formation and destruction or 'end' is seen all over the Universe. We also have observed every stage of star life and are currently looking at very early galaxy formation.

Verlch and others can refuse to accept the evidence, but then what else is new?

Remember, we are only able to visually observe a fraction of the Milkyway. Much of the far side is out of sight.

I was going to make the "crap in the way" arguement, but Mabuse beat me to it. Well done.
